According to Variety.com, Will Smith’s Westbrook Studios and David Oyelowo’s Yoruba Saxon have partnered with Netflix to produce the film adaptation of the upcoming book Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun by British-Nigerian author, journalist and hair care educator Tọlá Okogwu. Bel-Air Trailer

Bel-Air is a serialized one-hour drama set in modern-day America inspired by both The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Morgan Cooper’s fan trailer. “Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun” Gets Film Adaptation

Tọlá Okogwu’s Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun is getting a film adaptation from Netflix, Westbrook Studios, and Yoruba Saxon. Ola Shokunbi is writing the adaptation. Westbrook Studios’ Heather Washington and Yoruba Saxon’s Jessica Oyelowo are serving as executive producers with Westbrook Studios’ Will Smith and Jon Mone and Yoruba Saxon’s David Oyelowo as producers.

In Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun a teen “learns she has powers and travels to Nigeria to learn more about her origins, where she discovers a threat to her newfound magical community.” (Netflix)

In related news, Tọlá Okogwu’s Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun will be published by Simon & Schuster in the U.S. and U.K. in June 2022.

“CANTO” Getting Animated Feature

Westbrook Studios is developing an animated feature based on David M. Booher and Drew Zucker’s CANTO. Booher is writing the screenplay. Booher and Zucker will produce the film alongside Westbrook Studios’ Jon Mone. Westbrook Studios’ Ryan Shimazaki is overseeing the project.

CANTO, published by IDW Publishing, is set in the land are Arcana. Canto and the other tin-people have been enslaved and their hearts have been replaced by clocks. Love is forbidden, but Canto has fallen in love with Tin Girl. When slavers damage Tin Girl’s clock, Canto goes on a quest to find all of the tin-people’s hearts.
