Excerpt of the Forest’s attic of secrets: A playlist for August
Waving Through a Window -- Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen)
“On the outside, always looking in Will I ever be more than I've always been? 'Cause I'm tap, tap, tapping on the glass I'm waving through a window I try to speak, but nobody can hear So I wait around for an answer to appear While I'm watch, watch, watching people pass I'm waving through a window, oh Can anybody see, is anybody waving back at me?”
August was not always the shy and anxious boy, but upon finding about his parents, he shrunk back into himself and became quiet and nervous. His self-esteem dropped to the floor and most of his old friendships ended due his incapability to communicate. He feels alone and is honestly just waiting for someone who can actually see in how much pain he is, because he is unable to say it himself.
Michael In The Bathroom -- George Salazar (Be More Chill)
“I am hanging in the bathroom at the biggest party of the fall I could stay right here or disappear and nobody'd even notice at all I'm a creeper in a bathroom cause my buddy kinda left me alone but I'd rather fake pee than stand awkwardly and pretend to check a text on my phone”.
He never was the popular guy, but he was always hanging out with someone, now, even if he sneaks into parties, nobody seems to notice and nobody seems to care. He feels so out of touch with everything and everyone that he is wondering why he is still insisting on trying to socialize.
Chasing Cars -- Sleeping At Last (Snow Patrol cover)
“If I lay here If I just lay here Would you lie with me and just forget the world?Forget what we're told Before we get too old Show me a garden that's bursting into life”.
Soft version for soft boy. He is just looking for some peace of mind and soul, if he could he would just go away and forget about everything to live a calm and nice life. The song could also refer to a friend or a lover, whoever would like to be with him and accept him with all his fears and insecurities.
Understand -- Shawn Mendes
“But I've been on this train too long People getting off and on Praying that I don’t forget where I belong And every time I ask myself
Am I turning into someone else? I’m praying that I don’t forget just who I am I really wanna understand I just wanna understand”.
With his drastic change of personality, August feels like he is losing himself and that there is no way he can go back to his previous happy self. He barely recognizes himself in the mirror and is just looking for some certainty that the person everyone used to love is still inside somewhere.
