Devastation strikes
The downtown core of my hometown was ravaged by what we now assume to be an electrical fire early yesterday evening. It is believed that the fire started in the basement of the local butcher shop, and within two hours it spread to the adjacent building. After five hours the flames were reported to have been over 30 feet tall, and completely destroyed the two buildings as well as all businesses and apartments within. Among the tenants who were displaced were my brother and his girlfriend, as well as two of my closest friends who have two little ones, and another good friend.
This devastating event has opened my eyes to just how quickly everything can change, and how easy it is to lose everything. My heart aches at the thought of what my brother has lost, and it nearly bursts when I consider the grand total in losses from all apartments and businesses. This is a time when a community needs to stand strong, but I feel that it won’t be enough.
I started a donation page on GoFundMe to try and raise $50,000.00 for everyone affected. Compared to the estimated $1,000,000.00 in losses, it seems almost laughable to think that a simple $50,000.00 could help at all. But every little bit counts.
