Chapter 8: NOT ENOUGH TIME
They run to the town square and catch the scene of Agnes floating while the townies surround Wanda, their voices overlapping and shouting, suffocating her. Her power reflects how she feels and chokes them. Y/N looks at Bucky, not knowing what to do.
“No stop. I’m sorry. I’m sorry.” Wanda says desperately as she takes back her magic.
“If you won’t let us go. Just let us die,” Mrs. Hart, if that was even her real name begs.
“I will… I will let you go, I will, I will.”
“What’s stopping you? Use your power now. Heroes don’t torture people,” Agnes jabs.
Wanda pants and shoots a burst of energy up into her barrier.
“Now you’ll see,” Agnes cackles, knowingly.
“Bucky!” Y/N says as she stops running, feeling off.
He stops and looks at her as she begins to fall apart much like the barrier. Fragments of her being shift and break.
“No, no, no please,” Bucky picks her up and carries her closer to the centre.
“What? No…” Wanda whispers seeing the people she loves partially disappearing.
“Now do you see? You tied your family to this twisted world and now one can’t exist without the other.”
“Don’t go. Don’t –” Bucky whispers.
Y/N reaches up a hand.
“Save Westview or save your family,” Agnes hums thoughtfully.
As Wanda closes the barrier Vision and the twins run to her.
“Not yet,” Y/N says. Bucky puts her down and kisses her.
“Y/N, Bucky! I’m sorry I… I just wanted you and Vision back. I’m sorry Bucky.”
“We understand, Wanda.” She jogs to her best friend, while holding Bucky’s hand and gives her a hug. “And you two, you’re okay?” she asks the twins after giving them a hug each.
Agnes chants in Latin and a surge of black and purple hurtles toward them.
“No!” Wanda puts up a red barrier but it’s clear that Agnes’ magic isn’t like Wanda’s as it absorbs her energy, turning her hands a lifeless black.
“How sweet,” Agnes flies tauntingly.
Suddenly the other Vision flies over and armoured trucks come to a stop.
Vision flies to attack his counterpart and Wanda turns to Y/N.
“Y/N… I’m giving you back a part of you I hid.” She raises her hand to Y/N’s temple and she feels a jolt through her. “You were one of the most skilled spies SHIELD had, it’s time for you to be that again.” Then she turns to the twins. “Boys, handle the military with your aunt and uncle. Mommy will be right back.” Wanda flies up to meet Agnes.
Bucky and Y/N see two incoming armoured vehicles approach. They notice that their clothes had turned into tactical gear for agility and Y/N feels a sense of familiarity.
The twins work together to take down the squad that had their guns aimed, Billy sends a pistol Y/N’s way and she shoots out the tires of the two trucks coming toward them. They screech to a stop and Bucky and Y/N take on one each. She approaches one with a man and woman. The man comes out but it seems his partner is not interested in fighting as she falls out of the truck.
“You’re supposed to be dead,” he says.
“Wow you really suck,” Y/N hits him with the point of her elbow and he is stunned, stumbling back. “What’s the matter? Didn’t think a housewife would know how to hit a traitor to the country?”
He goes for a punch but she dodges, sweep kicking him to the ground. He grunts and reaches for his gun but she steps on his hand causing him to cry out.
“You’re not even real,” he spits and uses all his strength to push on her leg causing her to fall back. Normally she, in her past life, would have had better balance but it’s probably the lack of practice. He pulls his gun on her, keeping a distance so she doesn’t do the same thing back at him.
“Only cowards aim a gun on a downed opponent,” she challenges. It’s not like dying a second time would be so bad.
“You think you’re worthy of an honourable death?”
“Can it get more honourable than dying for a stone that would restore half the universe?” she retorts, with Wanda restoring her abilities she also got Wanda’s memories of her.
He frowns but his gaze moves to the twins celebrating their victory against the disarmed, frozen soldiers. He moves the direction of his aim and fires five shots.
“Boys!” Y/N shouts, her eyes following the bullets as they travel towards their targets.
As he fires his sixth shot she takes her gun tucked under her and with the one shot remaining she fires into his arm.
Bucky shields the boys from the five bullets using his vibranium arm. The last one, shot just as Y/N hit the Director, zooms past him but Billy catches it with his powers.
“Good luck rotting in a federal prison when the inmates finds out you tried to off two kids.” Billy puts a spell on him so that he is frozen, like the rest of the soldiers.
“Good job, boys!” Y/N shouts referring to the twins and Bucky.
Vision flies out of the library and the twins run toward them for a big hug. Bucky and Y/N look at each other and smile. He feels like the team they once were.
Suddenly the sky turns red as the barrier is hit with blasts of Wanda’s magic. There is a battle of purple and red energy in the air as Wanda and Agnes fight. Vision attempts to fly up to help Wanda but she puts a barrier that pushes him back down.
“What is she doing?” Bucky asks but only Wanda can know. Y/N looks up concerned for her best friend but trusts that Wanda has a plan. She squeezes Bucky’s hand every time Agnes sees impermeable to Wanda’s powers, only absorbing them to fuel her own.
The battle rages on but just as it seems like Wanda has given all her power to Agnes runes appear on each wall of the boundary, rendering Agnes useless and she takes the magic back.
They float down and Y/N smiles proudly at her best friend. After she hugs her family, Y/N goes in for her hug.
“That was incredible!”
“I can’t believe Agatha – Agnes – was the one ruining everything this whole time,” Wanda says.
“Wait so… her name was Agatha all along?”
“Well, it seems our dream home has been reduced to a fixer upper,” Vision comments looking at the mess and rubble surrounding them.
Y/N recognizes Wanda’s face; it was a dream home but that’s just it. It’s just a dream. Something fleeting, to be enjoyed briefly but will never last long. She knows it and so does Vision.
“I know you’ll set everything right,” he smiles and if one were to look close enough, they would see the sadness behind it. “Just not for us.”
“No,” Wanda replies as her eyes move to meet Y/N’s who also understands what she has to do. “Not for us.”
Y/N snakes her arm around Bucky’s and locks their fingers together. “Shall we head home?” she says. He smiles and kisses her forehead.
The walk home feels shorter than usual as they know what’s to come. They split and walk into their own houses, Y/N and Wanda share a knowing look before they enter.
“Want some lemonade?” Y/N asks Bucky.
“No, I… I just want to sit.” He takes off his bullet-holed jacket, with Wanda’s illusion gone, he sees his vibranium arm clearly now, no longer masked to look like flesh.
“Okay,” Y/N says, smiling slightly, tears are already welling up in her eyes as she takes a seat on the couch next to him.
“I – I don’t know how to do this,” he chuckles uncomfortably. “I imagined so many times what I would say if I had the chance but now that I have it… it’s all gone.”
“You don’t have to say anything,” she whispers.
“There’s too much to say and not enough time. I just… wish we had more.”
“I know. There’s never enough. But what we do have enough of is love for each other,” she sniffs and moves closer to him, taking his hands. “I am so grateful that I got to experience this life with you. I got everything I ever wanted just by being here, waking up next to you every morning. I couldn’t ask for more.”
“I could,” he laughs though tears fall from it as he thought of the idea of having kids together that they talked about so much. “I would ask for forever with you. And I know that that’s selfish; we already got more time than what was planned for us.” He raises his hand to cup her cheek. “I could never love someone like this again.”
“You have my permission,” she smiles sadly.
“I don’t want to.”
“I would never want you to put your life on hold because of me.” She lifts her hands to his neck, caressing him.
“You are…” he takes a deep breath. “were my life.”
“You have to keep going, sweetheart. For me. For you.”
“How can I go on, knowing what I’ve lost? How we could have lived if I hadn’t…” He shakes his head, tilting it so it touches hers.
“Don’t think about that. That wasn’t your fault. It wasn’t even Thanos’ fault. It was just… meant to be. The world needs to have Bucky Barnes back,” she whispers. “Strong, brave, selfless.” She kisses him with each word.
“The world deserves you back,” he insists.
She rolls her eyes playfully. “Don’t be stubborn. It already lost me. But you… will never. Okay? I’m right here.” She lowers one hand and stops at his heart. “Always.” She kisses him once more, long and hard and passionately. “Why don’t you go to bed? I’ll be right up,” she promises.
He nods slowly, wiping tears away.
Wanda takes that as the invitation to knock.
Y/N opens the door with a smile, eyes red from crying. “Come on in, Scarlet Witch,” she greets with the moniker Agatha gave her.
Wanda laughs and walks in. “I just put the twins to bed…” she says.
“Wanna sit outside? Admire my forget-me-nots?”
Wanda nods.
The cool evening air is welcome as they sit on the patio. Wanda conjures up iced tea, their go-to drink.
“I see Bucky finally made that bird bath,” she comments.
“Isn’t he ever the diy guy?” Y/N jokes. “I don’t think he could have done it outside of Westview, though.”
They both laugh but soon it dwindles to a sigh.
“I… never meant to hurt anyone,” Wanda sighs. “I just wanted you and Vision back.” She stares off to the distance. “When I lost him the… second time and I was snapped away I thought that was that. How could I get hurt any more after that?” she recalls. “Then I came back and the one person I was looking forward to seeing again… the only person I really had left. Wasn’t here anymore,” Wanda takes a shuddering breath and Y/N reaches over the table for her hand. “I knew how Bucky felt because I felt it too… I was feeling it again the same time he was. I asked him to come with me to S.W.O.R.D Headquarters, where I found out Vision’s… body was.” She struggles with the word even now. “They cut him up. Drilled into him. I… was so angry. So hurt. We drove to Westview and when I saw what he had planned for us. It all just took over. I wanted it all back. So did Bucky.”
“I will never blame you,” Y/N comforts. “You’re my sister. And I love you so much and I forgive you.”
“How did you know?” Wanda asks. “How did you know I needed your forgiveness?”
“My magical intuition,” she jokes and Wanda laughs.
“I guess I’m not the only magical girl in town,” she recites Agatha’s words.
“We’re the only girls in town,” Y/N says as she sees the red barrier getting closer now. “If you ever need me… I’m sure there’s a spell to talk to the dead.” It’s another joke but it may be possible.
“I’ll look into it,” Wanda winks with teary eyes.
“We better get back to our hubbies.”
“What would they do without us?” they chuckle and get serious again.
“Thank you for giving us the change to be together again. I hope I see you in another life, Wanda Maximoff,” Y/N says as she walks Wanda to the door.
“I’ll make sure of it,” she replies, hugging her tightly before leaving to her own home.
Y/N walks up the stairs, slowly making her way to their bedroom. “Did you say your goodbyes?” Bucky asks as he stands shirtless, looking out the window, watching the barrier close in.
“Mhm,” Y/N hums. She changes into one of his t-shirts and walks towards him. She gently takes his vibranium hand and guides him to the bed. “I just want you to hold me.”
Bucky nods and wraps her up in his arms, her head on his chest, listening to his heartbeat. She feels his breathing quicken and she knows it’s because he’s crying. Hurting. And it brings tears to her own eyes again. I only hurt because you do, she thinks. When you love someone you feel their pain, it’s easy for her to accept what needs to be done. She’s not the one being left behind.
“I don’t want to say goodbye.”
“You already have,” With a final kiss, he feels her disappear as the barrier engulfs them. The comfortable feeling of holding her in his arms is gone, her warmth, her scent. Everything was gone again.
Opening his eyes, it’s day and he stands in a house as empty as his heart. A house that isn’t theirs anymore. It never really was.
He wipes his tears and walks out the front door to see a dreary, grey town. No longer vibrant with happiness and hope. As if it never happened.
Wanda stands in the foundations of her home and Bucky approaches silently. They stand together and Wanda takes a shuddering breath. They walk in silence through the crowd looking at them in disdain, leaving the place they called home for the first time in too long.
“I’m not angry you did this,” Bucky says. “I’m glad you did. I’m glad I got to see her again. We were together again.”
She nods.
“I don’t know how to live without her. But I promised her I’d try.”
“You’re staying,” she states. She doesn’t have to be a mind reader to know what he has decided.
“I want to… atone for my sins as the Winter Soldier. Make amends,” Bucky says.
“I’ll leave you with them then?” she says, referring to the sirens they hear approaching.
“Yes.”
“Goodbye, Bucky.”
“I’ll be seeing you, Wanda.”
