hand outstretched
avoiding the dance
i pulled you toward the lights
into the space where we just might
but there’s a knot in my stomach
a weight holding me to the floor
you drifted to the door
from the light that held your gaze to mine
swaying to the simple melodies
frequencies for only you and me
i promise i’m not trying
to break your heart
there was a campfire outside
burning low in the moonlight
as our separate paths began
to intertwine
your eyes are sad
but so were mine
nothing i could ever do
would begin to make them bright
we were lost in the lights
the crowd ebbing like the tide
whispering in their disguise
like the ones we wore that night
even when
i took your hand
we lay our troubled minds
on the floor, as morning light
crept in
