Nitza Tufiño's "Neo-Boriken" (1990) ceramic tile murals at the 103rd Street (6) station in Manhattan were inspired by the petroglyphs of the Taïno Indians, Puerto Rico's first inhabitants, and by Mayan and Aztec motifs. The artist created these works after interviewing neighborhood residents, many of whom are of Latin American and Caribbean heritage about their history. Nitza Tufiño’s work with Taller Boricua, as a founding member of the East Harlem-based Nuyorican print studio, is now on view at El Museo del Barrio in "Taller Boricua: A Political Print Shop in New York,” recognizing the studio's 50th anniversary through Jan. 17, 2021.
