We typically don’t accept translation requests for anything other than member posts on Weverse because it would get way too out of hand, but an exception will be made this time and this time only because Run is technically Weverse content and explaining this won’t take too long (this is not invitation for people to begin sending Run translation requests). 

“Yeollappōngttai (열라뽕따이) / Yōllappōngttai (욜라뽕따이)” is a made up word that is usually used to mean “hiya!”, and it comes from an early 2000s Gag Concert (now defunct comedy sketch show) sketch in which comedian Cho Ji Hoon (조지훈) imitates Tony Jaa's character in the movie "Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior". It was a pretty popular catchphrase for a while.

It’s said that Cho Ji Hoon watched the movie, heard something similar to “ppōng-ttai/bbōng-ddai” and thought, if it’s going to be “bbong-ttai” there might as well be a lot of it, added “열라 (yeolla)” in front of it, and stylized it to “욜라 (yōlla)" . “열라" is a slang term that means “a lot/like crazy”.

In short, it’s “fake” Thai and I wouldn’t condone using it 😬

I know this is a bit late, but for the “little blue dot” that RM mentions in his letter, I think it’s a Carl Sagan reference. You can google “little blue dot carl sagan quote” or something amongst those lines to see it (it’s kind of long).

I’m not 100% sure (who knows what goes through his IQ 148 head?), but I just wanted to give you a hint. I’m a copy editor, so I’ve become very good at catching references, but I’m not a translator, so I could be misunderstanding him. Sagan sounds like someone RM would like though, and also the dust reference he often makes is a motif in Sagan’s work too.

Hi. Thank you for everything. I wanted to ask what seokjin meant by the atmosphere of the replies being different or the advertisements being cursed at in his reply to weverse's post? And why has the post been deleted? Is it because army's said that they cannot afford the nyel? Thanks.

Before I explain, I would like to say that I’m uncomfortable with people thinking Jin was backing fans up about the live being overpriced. He very well could think that in private, that’s a definite possibility, but nowhere in his replies does he even allude to that. I’m not accusing you, anon, of doing this but please do not put words in his mouth.

Jin reply #1: I’ve always only seen good comments [on Weverse] but the atmosphere of the comments here [under this post] is completely different

Explanation for reply #1: Atmosphere = Vibes. Jin is used to seeing pleasant, positive messages on Weverse because he probably doesn’t venture outside of the Bangtan Weverse channel often and the posts within the Bangtan channel are posted with the assumption that Bangtan might see them, so they’re generally kept very pleasant. In addition, ARMY, especially K-ARMY, pretty stringently polices what is posted to protect the members from ever seeing anything unsavory (either via the “Hide from Artist” function or by voicing their displeasure in the replies of a post, thereby forcing the op to take the post down themselves).

The general Weverse space outside of the Bangtan channel, however, is not as much of a bubble and the general motive is not to leave sweet messages to the group they love but to comment on the topic at hand. In this case, the topic was the New Years Live that’s streaming today, so a shift in energy/vibes should be expected.

hiiii! i have a tiny question: does the fact that namseok are same age friends also have to do with him talking in that informal, close way to him? idk if I'm explaining myself well hehe but i mean, would he potentially also use it with say, someone in the maknae line? thanks for all your hard work!

I’m not quite sure I understand what you’re asking, especially regarding the maknae line, but Joon and Hobi don’t use honorifics with each other typically. They call each other by name and don’t use polite tense most of the time. Sometimes, they will call each other “J-Hope-ssi!” “Namjoon-ssi!” or speak in polite tense which is just kind of a playful thing to do. The other members do it too and I do that with my friends. I’m not quite sure I can explain this well but it’s just a cute kind of quirky thing to do to be randomly formal with friends. Some people also switch to polite tense as a form of “aegyo”. It’s also not uncommon for close people to suddenly speak in honorifics/polite tense when they are trying to broach a sensitive subject/want to discuss something serious/voice a complaint, etc. the list goes on, so that lines do not get crossed and a certain level of respect can be maintained when tensions are high. 

TMI but I am the type of person who will start speaking to friends and family in polite tense when I’m feeling a bit playful and want to show aegyo. I will also switch to polite tense when arguing or voicing criticisms. I will also do it randomly just because the mood strikes me.

In this case, in the instance of this recent Weverse update, Namjoon is just being playful. I’ve noticed he switches between polite tense and informal quite often in everyday life (even when speaking with people who are younger than him), perhaps consciously/intentionally, perhaps not, but I personally see it as one of Joon’s ingrained/natural ways of showing aegyo.
