I know this is a bit late, but for the “little blue dot” that RM mentions in his letter, I think it’s a Carl Sagan reference. You can google “little blue dot carl sagan quote” or something amongst those lines to see it (it’s kind of long).
I’m not 100% sure (who knows what goes through his IQ 148 head?), but I just wanted to give you a hint. I’m a copy editor, so I’ve become very good at catching references, but I’m not a translator, so I could be misunderstanding him. Sagan sounds like someone RM would like though, and also the dust reference he often makes is a motif in Sagan’s work too.
I didn’t send this earlier, because I was sure someone else would have mentioned it by now, but since no one did, here you go. Hope this helps. I said it on New Years and I’ll say it again, you work so hard Amy. I’m happy to at least be able to offer this tiny wisp of help.
(Also, you don’t have to publish this publicly. It’s just a tip.)
I really appreciate you. Take care! Be well!
Oo! So if it is a Carl Sagan reference, he was for sure talking about the earth! Very cool, I love this. Not late at all. Never late. I know you said I don’t have to publish but I thought it would be nice if other people saw too. Please let me know if you’re not comfortable having your url published and I will take this ask down immediately, and will credit you in the original Joon post as an anonymous source. If you don’t have a problem with it though, I will tag your url for the theory in the original Joon post. Please give me your explicit permission to do so if you are okay with it!
I’m not the end all be all—different perspectives, different backgrounds, different bases of knowledge are so precious and I appreciate this and you very much. Thank you!
Joon literally said “this blue dot,” and you’re so right, I think the dust is also a Sagan reference. Sounds awfully similar to “...every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.” — Carl Sagan, Pale Blue Dot, 1994
“Sagan sounds like someone RM would like though” He definitely has an interest in Sagan and has probably even read him. Sagan’s Cosmos is in his book collection! This is like a puzzle piece falling beautifully into place and it’s so pleasing to me.
So YOU were the culprit. The lovely person behind that New Years ask. I see you, I appreciate you too. Thank you again. Sending you so much love and well wishes! Please stay safe ♡
