I've been really really overwhelmed lately, with all the terrible news coming at us left & right lately. I hadn't actually participated in an action or a rally because I didn't know if it would help or hurt my mental state - if it would make me feel better or worse about the whole state of affairs. But the thing that I forgot was that there's a whole community out there. A whole, wonderful, amazing community. I want to thank every single member of the The Women and Girls Foundation team for helping us get that "Bright Spots" email out last week, and just for being there through this whole awful time. I also want to thank Wasi Mohamed and Betty Cruz and the whole crew that helped put We Will Not Be Banned! together - this was such a cathartic experience, and made me feel empowered and enraged and actually whole again. So, there was a terror attack in my city last night, and honestly? Had it not been for the Daesh flag they found in the guy’s possession (and the details that came out subsequently), I would have just shrugged it off as another act of violence.

Obviously, the fact that a police officer was injured is cause for special concern (and I’m very glad that he is, along with two of the other four people injured, okay). Otherwise, though, it feels like the kind of crime that does happen here.

Think about Edmonton. We’ve been named Canada’s murder capital twice in the past 12 years. Violence isn’t anything new here. It’s certainly not something migrants and refugees have brought to the city, either.

That Edmonton does have this history of violence is what’s made it easy for me to go forward. 

You want to terrorize me? You want to terrorize us?

You’ll have to try a little harder than that.
