Weyburn showed he’s got a big heart when he got his nose down first at 46-1 in the G2 Gotham over Crowded Trade
Weyburn applied pressure to Freedom Fighter early; when that rival started to fade Crowded Trade looked like he’d get the lead, but Weyburn refused to quit and fought back to get his nose down first. Heavy favorite Highly Motivated got off to a bad start but closed well to get up for third.
Weyburn is a Canadian-bred son of Pioneerof the Nile and Sunday Affair - making Weyburn a half-brother to stakes horse Nipigon & G3 winner Yorkton. Sunday Affair is an unraced daughter of the Japanese mare, Million Gift. Million Gift hasn’t accomplished much as a racehorse or a broodmare yet, but she’s a daughter of the important mare, Maplejinksy. Maplejinksy was a multiple G1 winner race mare and is the dam of the champion Sky Beauty. Along with being the third dam to Weyburn, she’s the third dam to Pine Island and Point of Entry.
Always nice to see Jimmy Jerkins get a horse on the Derby trail, and this win put Weyburn in the picture with 50pts.
