something unformed but has been rattling around in my head re: ovi
as of like a few months ago i was like wellllll do you think they would retire 8 leaguewide since they retired 99. altho i think no mostly because goals aren't everything and wayne has more overall points and also cups. and the conspirator anti cdn nationalism part of my brain was like no they wouldn't because ovi is still considered The Other, whereas wayne is a good canadian boy, so they would never retire 8
but now like after All That that's happened i don't know if the above points have any bearing
but to that point, i think a lot of people (canadians) would have had beef with ovi again because he is the Other (on this topic, would people like it more if ovi beat the record if he was american or russian? hard to say. i think they can maybeee accept a russian more than american, even pre all this). but now of course if wayne is tarnished and hated in canada people might even actively CHEER for ovi to break the record simply because its wayne (rather than it being a really cool feat or people liking ovi/caps etc)
