What is an Algorithm?
An algorithm is a set of steps used to accomplish a task much like finding a book at the library, or making a sandwich. The complexity of the algorithm depends on the complexity of the desired outcome. In computer science, an algorithm is exactly the same as this. Some examples of computer science algorithms might be image compression, or finding the quickest way from Seattle to Atlanta, or even landing a rocket safely back on Earth like Space-X. Creating algorithms can be tricky as not all algorithms are created equal; One algorithm may be more efficient than another yet they both accomplish the same task.
How can you tell if an algorithm is good? Algorithms should execute (run) as quickly as possible to accomplish a task efficiently. Runtime for algorithms should be as close to zero as possible while still being correct. You might have an algorithm that could take weeks to determine the fastest possible route from point A to point B while another may not be as accurate, but can accomplish results with a similar outcome in a significantly reduced amount of time. For instance, say that you have a truck that needs to run a route between 25 different locations all varying in distance including your starting area, and you need to find the fastest possible route covering all 24 locations not including your start. That would be 24! (factorial) routes or 620,448,401,733,239,439,360,000 routes, this could take a long time. Perhaps you could write an algorithm like the nearest insertion algorithm that returns a completed route in a couple of seconds, but it isn’t completely accurate – maybe there was a faster “possible” route? The difference is that it executes in an efficient time frame to complete the task.
Comparing algorithms can be tricky because there are many variables at play in a computer science setting including programming language used, and hardware the software ran on. The best way to compare an algorithm is through Asymptotic Analysis which is able to test an algorithm independent of hardware, or software language. I digress - algorithms are all around us and they make our lives easier. This has been a personal reflection written for my own understanding of the concept, so stay tuned for more if you are interested.
