that's what I thought at first too, but in the gif/photos the op's referring to, it looks way too big and round? (unless we're talking about pre-WWII dogtags)
(of course, he might not've worn the same necklace thingy through all five seasons, so maybe we're remembering dogtags from an earlier episode, but I'm too lazy to go through and see if I can find them)

You mean the metal guitar pick? I think it's just Christian's necklace that he likes to wear. No canon explanation that I can remember.
