I wonder if you can do sword stuff as your regular fitness routine.
I really do need to start lifting small weights again like I did back during Macbeth. It’s probably too late to have an impact for Edward (we open in less than two months--thankfully I’m using a saber this time instead of a longsword!), but it’ll help a lot for Henry IV. Henry is a fightapalooza, and basically every male character has something that requires a fight call.
The bigger issue is that I’m not very graceful and don’t have the greatest awareness of where my body is, so I’m afraid of hurting people or looking stupid. The people responsible for fights swear up and down that they’ll tell us if we are unsafe or look stupid... but this is patently untrue. During Caesar, both Brutusfriend and I told them that we didn’t feel safe with one piece of choreography they gave us, and our fight captain insisted that we just needed to keep trying. (We ultimately won that battle because we flat-out refused, and the alternate choreo looked much better, IMO.) And we’ve had all kinds of fights that looked stupid.
So I am... not optimistic about this aspect of rehearsing.
(On an unrelated note, when are you back in Ohio?)
