I wonder why we do not focus on understanding. We focus more on knowledge and skill. When teaching, we need to be committed to all three. It is like a triangle. Remove any one of the three and the triangle falls apart.

I see that learning facts is not learning for understanding. Understanding is the ability to think and act flexibly with what one know. Knowledge, skill, and understanding are the stock in trade of education. While knowledge and skill can be translated as information and routine performance on tap, understanding slips by these simple standards.
