The Reading & Discussion Guide for What We Lose by Zinzi Clemmons is now live #ontheblog! 👀 check it out at the #linkinbio • • “In this book, Zinzi Clemmons challenges us to consider: What do we lose when we lose a loved one? It’s more than simply that person’s physical presence in our lives… it’s everything as we had come to know it.” • • This was such a rich, dynamic & complex little book. I need to read it again I think. Clemmons tackles a lot here — loss, racial identity, family, love & relationships — with a very deft, particular hand. I love the way she crafted this story & I hope the guide helps you do so too! Tell me what you think! Let’s chat! 🤔🤓 • • #literaryblackgirl #litblkgrl #blackgirlsread #wellreadblackgirl #blackstories #literacy #reading #whatwelose #zinziclemmons #debut #novel
What I’ve been reading over the past few weeks. They’re both very different but and they're both incredibly good. Little Fires Everywhere is a great book to read if you want to learn more abt the structure of a work of fiction. It's so well orchestrated I wanted to dap Celeste up after every chapter. Each chapter is its own self contained world of excitement that pushes the reader on to the next. This book is very much concerned with class and privilege and has many familiar moments for those who have grown up alongside white suburbia (🙋🏾). I really enjoyed this book but the one thing that really bothered me is that while it was written by a Chinese author, all the characters of color in the book hover in the periphery. I can't help wondering why that choice was made. What We Lose is a series of vignettes that illuminate the loss of the main character, Thandi’s, mother. The book is pieced together with images and news excerpts that function as clues as the narrative begins to unfold. It's a hybrid novel, which is to say it blends themes and elements of different genres (fiction, nonfiction, poetry etc.). The main character in this book is a black South African, and I really appreciate how this book seamlessly moved between ideas of identity, ethnicity, race, and class without disrupting the central narrative of loss. This book really inspired me to seek out more black hybrid literature that bucks traditional narrative. #currentlyreading #readersofinstagram #zinziclemmons #celesteng #whatwelose #littlefireseverywhere #blackbooks
"Thandi is a black woman, but often mistaken for Hispanic or Asian She is American, but doesn't feel as American as some of her friends She is South, but doesn't belong in South Africa either. Her mother is dying" Treated myself to a new book today. Can't wait to read this 😊😊😊 . . . #whatwelose #ZinziClemmons #books #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #bookcommunity #booksofig #ilovebooks 📚 (at Johannesburg, Gauteng)
