This is a letter I received from Gregory Rabassa – translator of Clarice Lispector’s The Apple in the Dark (Knopf 1967), her first novel published in English, and One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Marquez (Harper & Row 1970), among many others – and I can report we had a papo bem legal ! I should also say that Michael Heim, who was Rabassa’s student at Columbia, was my teacher at @ucla , and he was always generous. He encouraged me to translate Clarice Lispector and to write about Elizabeth Bishop’s translations of her stories, and he suggested that I contact Rabassa to discuss translation, Lispector, and Bishop. Here are two articles on Rabassa: from @parisreview https://bit.ly/2DNAXIs and @nytimes https://nyti.ms/2FYoyr2 – and one on Michael Heim: from @uclanews https://bit.ly/2pBUU0o . . . . . #translation #translators #mentors #GregoryRabassa #MichaelHeim #ClariceLispector #ElizabethBishop #AppleintheDark #stories #novels #Portuguese #English #Spanish #100años #Gabo #papolegal #obrigada
