“Who wants to help me sock old Donald in the jaw?“--I’ll reward you with fic!
To my American followers: instead of reblogging a bunch of anti-Trump posts, reading op eds, and obsessively refreshing Nate Silver's projections, please allow me to encourage you to volunteer for the only person who can defeat him instead. You can volunteer for tiny bits of time from home by phone banking. (https://www.hillaryclinton.com/calls/) It sounds scary, but it's actually very easy. You can do it in pajamas with tea and a furry animal for support.
There's a basic and very simple script. You're calling registered Democrats and helping them commit to making time to vote, and helping make sure they know their polling place and hours. We need to GET OUT THE VOTE! Mostly, the phone just rings--for me so far, about 1 in 12 calls pick up. I take lots of breaks. You can call for 5 or 10 minutes, then come back later. Calls last about 45 seconds. Not a single person has been nasty or unpleasant to me. In fact, multiple North Carolina folks have thanked me for volunteering, as one dude put it "to defeat that bad man." When I asked one “I believe you’re a Hillary supporter, is that right?” his answer was “Hells yeah! She my girl. Gonna get shit DONE!” (He was actually my first call and I got nervous and stammery and he was all, “you’re cool, sister, you’re good.”)
I SWEAR YOU CAN DO IT!!!! Like, seriously, if Captain America (and, you know, real soldiers) go into terrible physical danger to and risk life and limb to protect us from tyranny and injustice, voting and making a few calls is super easy.
As a kid, I played lots of games in which I fought Nazis for the good old USofA--and I cosplay Captain America, so I guess I've never grown out of that. So, here is that fight in all it's boring, mundane, non-glorious, non-martial reality: calling strangers in Ohio and North Carolina and Florida, getting out the vote.
But just to make it a little more fun, I’m wearing my full cosplay outfit, shield at my side, and pretending this is my script: "Hello! Is NAME there? Hi, NAME! This is Captain America calling with STATE for Hillary in Place I'm Not Actually Located. In the 1940s, I was willing to give my life in the fight against fascism; now it's 2016 and we're still fighting. Please help me sock old Adolf, I mean, Donald on the jaw by going to the polls this election. Can I count on your support?" :)
And, as a little extra encouragement, I WILL WRITE YOU FIC! Anyone who makes 45 calls for Hillary, gets a little ficlet from me! If you make 100, I’ll write you a proper little story! And if somebody makes 500 calls, you get an out-take from P&P. (Just send me a screenshot of the call counter in the corner of Hillary’s call page.)
