The Moment You Know
I think the hardest part is that it doesn’t always happen during a fight or a breakup. Sometimes, it’s in the middle of a perfectly normal moment — like they’re talking, and suddenly you just feel… done.
Not angry. Not heartbroken. Just this still, flat kind of knowing. Like something inside you clicked into place quietly, and now you can’t un-know it.
That this isn’t the person. That you don’t feel seen in the way you want to be. That you’re tired of hoping it’ll shift — or worse, of shrinking yourself to make it feel okay.
I’ve had moments where I smiled through it. Nodded. Laughed even. Because it’s not like they did anything “wrong.” They just aren’t it. And maybe they never were. But I wanted them to be. God, I wanted them to be.
And now I’m sitting with that — the quiet grief of realizing someone you cared about isn’t your person. Not in the forever way. Not in the soft, soul-safe way.
It’s weird how heavy a calm moment can feel.
