I sooo badly want to sit down and write an essay about how educators in Saudi talk about Modernism.. i’m taking three literary courses on Modernism, each a different instructor, and im just sooooo fascinated by how it is filtered through conservative religious lenses. How some are sympathetic, some are judgemental, and some try to distance themselves from it as a product of the past that’s no longer relevant. Each of them does not seem to acknowledge that many people from the gulf experienced this disillusionment as well. Whether if it was the Gulf War, the economy crash, or the sahwa. it’s as if we don’t acknowledge the hardships, you can easily dismiss any doubt a person (in artist esp in this case) could have.
