7. In what ways do they prefer to show affection for each other?
The first time a sunflower materialised on her desk, Kathryn nearly dropped her coffee. She checked transporter logs, only to find no trace of anything there or in even replicator records. After three flowers over as many days, she remembered. She had mentioned missing Iowa flowers in the summer while laying, looking at the stars with B'Elanna, cuddled close. She'd spent the better part of an hour describing her summers with the smells, and her favourite sunflowers, towering over her as she watched clouds drift by. B'Elanna mostly just let her ramble on as she traced invisible patterns down her arms, across her stomach, wherever she could reach - Kathryn hadn't known that B'Elanna was paying so much attention. She would later find out that B'Elanna had worked with Kes to cultivate them in the hydroponics bay and had been waiting months for them to bloom.
B'Elanna dragged herself into her office after yet another morning yanked from bed to go fix something or another. As she collapsed into her chair, steaming banana pancakes materialised in front of her; a small card was tucked under the fork, reading simply "B'E, thank you. K." A tiny sunflower was painted along side B'Elanna's name, the watercoloured stem intertwining the letters. B'Elanna grinned - Kathryn didn't show affection much in public, but these little gestures meant the world to her, to both of them. She carefully tucked the note into the frame of her favourite picture - B'Elanna kissing Kathryn's cheek, and Kathryn's brilliant smile in return, eyes shut and nose crinkled.
