M51 - The Whirlpool Galaxy Not going to win any awards, but there are a lot of firsts wrapped up in this image: my first real data with the Radian Raptor 61 (had 15 min on Markarian's Chain before this) - First time ever attempting to capture M51 (don't really have a scope with a good focal length for it) - First time using a Pegasus Power Box Advanced (made setup and tear down so much easier!) - And first time using a Bahtinov mask for focusing. My real goal for last night was to get everything setup and make sure it all ran well it ran perfectly for my first really clear night in almost 2 months . My first impressions on the Radian Raptor is that I like the scope a lot, but I bought it for nebula and I haven't had a chance to point it to any yet. With a focal length of 275mm it's not going to be great for many targets during Galaxy season, especially in a bortle 8 zone. I plan to do a write up on my blog / website soon . 62 x 90s 20 darks; 50 flats, dark flats, and biases 400 ISO - Bortle 8 . The Whirlpool Galaxy, or M51, is over 23 million light years away from Earth. The light of 100 billion stars combined shines faintly in the night. An infinite number of worlds are revealed with long exposures in the darkest corners of the sky. ----------------------------------------- Camera Info • Canon 6D •@UOPineMountainObservatory 24” Cassegrain reflector •13 x 120” Exposure + 1 Dark Frame •26min Integration time for lights •6400 ISO •4200 WB ----------------------------------------- #justinhartney #m51 #milkyway #milkywaychasers #astrophotography #whirlpoolgalaxy #traveloregon #space #universityoforegon #uoregon #feedbacknation #thatNWadventure #nasa #space #watchthisinstagood #folkmagazine #theearthoutdoors #thevisualcollective #solareclipse #beautifuldestinations #nwc10k #vsco #wishyouwerenorthwest #visitbend #1859Oregon #canon_photos #llbeanmoment #bendmag #optoutside #columbia1938 (at Pine Mountain Observatory) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1CBCIzgjg5/?igshid=rzvc0ra1z8va
M51, the Whirlpool Galaxy, captured in 103 stacked images over only 17 minutes, with my #Vespera by @vaonis telescope. Hoping tonight will be as clear as last night! #nightskyphotography #m31 #whirlpoolgalaxy https://www.instagram.com/p/Cey5KtWrmQ0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

M 51. Otherwise known as the Whirlpool Galaxy. It is actually two interacting galaxies located approximately 23million light years away. This is my first legitimate attempt at photographing it with this gear. It ain’t a Hubble image, that’s for sure. It is 60 exposures at 30 seconds each along with calibration exposures to help improve the signal to noise ratio. I also shot longer exposures and then the clouds came in. I think I’ll shoot It again in hopes of significantly improving the image. Relatively steep learning curve in Astro photography, I’m just gonna say. #AstroPhotography #WhirlpoolGalaxy #Celestron #ZWO #ZWOCameras #clayhausphotography #WhatASteepLearningCurveThisHasBeen https://www.instagram.com/p/CCzH1uIh0pL/?igshid=7nfzw2mve4wx
