The moon turns red during a lunar eclipse because the only sunlight reaching the Moon passes through Earth’s atmosphere. After more than 2 years of no launches at Poker Flat Research Range, the LAMP mission successfully launched in the early morning of March 5th outside of Fairbanks Alaska. The LAMP mission, short for Loss through Auroral Microburst Pulsations, was launched into and above pulsating aurora, measuring the low-energy particles that cause them as well as the medium- and high-energy electrons that should also come from a chorus wave. The LAMP mission is an international collaboration with contributions from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, Dartmouth College, University of New Hampshire, and University of Iowa, and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, Tohoku University, Nagoya University, and Kyutech in Japan. The Orion Nebula is about 3 million years and roughly 1344 light years away. When dinosaurs roamed the Earth 65 million years ago, this nebula wasn’t even the sky! This photo is full of red and pink hydrogen-alpha as well as interstellar medium, the gas and dust between stars. A bright meteor zips in between Jupiter, our galaxy’s spiral, and our neighbor galaxy Andromeda. The Perseid meteor shower was incredible this year! Alongside @advil and @skygreene we must’ve seen over 300 meteors across 2 nights. This one was by far the brightest, illuminating the entire landscape. We thought it was lightning striking, but looked up and saw a green tail that left a lingering smoke trail for about 10 minutes. The silence of the bright flash was eerie.

There was an incredible lunar eclipse this morning. Not only was totality visible, the moon’s position and the time of year aligned the Milky Way center and our lunar satellite. The moon’s brightness during totality revealed the Milky Way to both the naked eye and camera.
