You awaken by a strange sound downstairs. There you see John sits on the kitchen counter, crossing his arms with a cigar in one hand. He has been there since the morning. You’re sitting on the chair and sipping on your tea. Your afternoon was quiet and enjoyable with his presence, as if grounding you and keeping you away from the harsh reality. He’s no longer busy with blinders’ works, and you’re happy that he gets to rest, but you also know he misses that life sometimes.
“Love,” John calls.
You smile at the sound leaving his lips. Even when he speaks, heaven hums. “Yeah?”
“Should I bake you cookies?” He asks, smirking at you.
You snort, “You can’t even touch the stove,” You get up from your seat and walk over to him. He put out his cigar and closes the distance between the two of you and begins to sway your body softly.
“Should I put the records on?” You suggest.
“Nah, it’s alright, you can sing,”
You look up at him and peck his lips, “What should I sing?”
Smiling, he replies, “Anything,”
My thoughts go back to a heavenly dance
A moment of bliss we spent
Our hearts were filled with a song of romance
As into the night we went
And sang to our hearts’ content
You’re dancing across the kitchen floor, swaying and swinging as the melody from your lips fill the air. Gliding and flowing, sometimes stepping on his toes which he pays no mind into.
‘The night was splendid
And the melody seemed to say
“Summer will pass away
Take your happiness while you may”’
He twirls you around like some kind of those dances in the play, making you both giggle when your hip hits something in the process.
“Sorry, I’m no professional,” He admits, stealing kisses from your lips.
“So I've noticed.” you tease him and keep singing.
'There 'neath the light of the moon
We sang a love song that ended too soon
The moon descended
And I found with the break of dawn,’
“Mama!”
Your cocks your head to the sound calling your name, smiling at your little boy who stands in the doorway with his great-aunt as you feel those hands slipping away from your body.
“You’re here early. Everything okay?” You ask as your son runs to hug you. He nods his head and grins widely.
But the grin soon turns to a confused smile when he asks you, “Why are you dancing alone?”
Your heart stops for a moment, trying to find the right words -no, it doesn’t have to be right, you just need words to answer your son. Still, nothing comes out. You look over at Polly and smile at her apologetically. She returns the smile sadly, then she speaks, “You like music, don’t you, William?” He nods and she continues, “Well, sometimes, when people love music so much, they dance, 'cause dancing makes them happy, even if it’s only for a little while.”
You don’t think your six years old son understands what his great-aunt has just said, but he nods his head anyway.
He pats your hand, making you look back at him, “Don’t worry, mama! I like dancing too. And while daddy’s away, we can dance together until he comes back!” He says cheerfully.
But the truth is, no matter how long you wait for him, he will never come back. He isn’t coming back.
You embrace your son and whispered in his ear, “It’s just us, Willy. Just you and me.”
The song
Is ended,
But the melody lingers on
You and the song are gone,
But the melody lingers on
