Laphroaig Tasting event at the Malt House South Park was amazing. It focused on old and discontinued Laphroaig. It was great to be able to pair them against each other. The drams had: . Starward Whisky, is amazing but near impossible to find in Japan. It was imperative to get this in Australia and bring it to the land of the ‘Rising Sun.’ It has been a hit with my mates in Japan and also great to know Australia is giving back superb Whisky to the world. . The uniqueness to the Whisky is the use of Ex-Shiraz Casks (from South Australia - with some other hidden secrets). The combination of this provides a profile which is fruity, sweet and subtlety Savoury. The final thing is the Cask is steamed and not charred. This allows the saturated wine to stay penetrated in the timber for flavour, with some more tannic in the after taste. . Colour: Burnt Umber . Nose: Sweetness and Fruit are the initial aromas which are pleasant. Then distinctive cherries and some pepper are sensed. Buttered Toffee makes this more appealing, with the hit of red grapes. . Palate: Plums and tart Shiraz makes this rich and sweet. The sweetness of toffee continues, which is counterbalanced with some fennel. Faint Cherries and some chewy almonds. . Finish: The smooth medium finish is complimented with vanilla, raspberries and oak tannins. . Another amazing night at @shantyshack_whisky , but more important to celebrate the birthday of @tourbillionn. As the night drew to a close, I was ready to go home, but I was given this good night dram. The colour of this Glenfarclas, Shinanoya is superb and the taste brilliant. Well balanced sweetness, with spice and smoke. . Colour: Deep Sherry . Nose: Christmas Cake and mild spice. Light smoke. . Palate: Brown Sugar and Raisins. Medium Peat . Finish: Long and sweet. With warming alcohol and drawn out peat. . My favourite selection of the Essence of Suntory range is the Yamazaki. This Peated, 12 year Whisky is unique and adds an element of Yamazaki I thought it has been missing. The dry peat works perfectly as an introduction. Akkeshi New Born, Foundations 1 was released in late February 18 and surprisingly it is already sold out. This is an early release from Toita-san, succumbing to international demand from the newest distillery (being the first new one in 80 years*). . The small 200 ml bottle packs a punch at 60% ABV, but this because the spirit is approx 12 months young. This is a Non-Peat release, with also releases occurring every 6 months until the ‘Single Malt Akkeshi’ is realised in 2020.
