Ce 24 novembre 2023 '' Nous nous opposons au Black Friday. N'oublions pas que derrière un prix, il y'a une personne qui travaille ''
December 13, 1916 – “White Friday”
The trenches weren’t the only battlefields during WWI - there was a front stretching hundreds of miles in the Alps along the Austro-Hungarian and Italian border. Fighting in steep mountains at altitudes up to 12,000 ft, the harsh environment became a greater threat than enemy fire. Men dug into glaciers and rock faces, creating tunnels and trenches to offer them some protection. One Austro-Hungarian barracks was built on Mount Marmolada and positioned to offer it adequate protection from Italian artillery. However, a Captain Schmid took notice of its precarious placement under an unstable snowpack and sent a request to move the barracks, a request that was denied. Days later, on the morning of December 13, 200,000 tons of snow and ice broke free and thundered down the mountain, burying the barracks and all of its occupants. Only a fraction survived, Schmid being one of them. 270 were buried alive and their bodies never recovered.
On this day alone, other avalanches across the Alps buried hundreds of other soldiers, wiping out entire regiments. The winter of 1916-1917 dumped record amounts of snowfall on the mountains, and during mid-December roughly 10,000 soldiers on all sides were buried and frozen in the deadliest avalanches in history. As the glaciers retreat today, artifacts and remains from WWI are beginning to surface. Maybe someday spring’s warmth will reveal Schmid’s buried men once again.
white friday
Earlier this year I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Sabaton's latest album, The War To End All Wars, has a song about the White War.
the framing is the tragic White Friday of 1916. Sabaton cleverly avoid lyrics that would identify the deceased as either Austro-Hungarian or Italian, allowing the song to represent all those who died on that day.
By reading comments under the videos and around the Internet it looks like this is the first time many folks outside of Italy or Austria, both older and younger people, learned about the White War. While the infinite mud plains and trenches of central Europe became the face of WWI for good reasons, I'm glad this song allowed more people to learn about a more "private" but equally if not more lethal and harsh side of this war.
LYRICS
I won’t be coming home
I won’t be going anywhere
I will guard this post forever
Here on the alpine slope where I did my final stand I shall remain
Among the ice and snow that binds me to this mountain
A force of nature too strong, sent from above Where spirits lead the way, the winds will never fade
White Friday, I’ll take the
Stairway to heaven
I’m sky high, when I die
I’ll be immortal Forever, I never
I won´t return to
Blood Mountain, I am the
Soldier of heaven
I saw the end of war
I watched the soldiers come and go
And I kept my watch forever
So many brave men fell in the battles that were raging down below
I have seen it all but none will hear my story
All of these years I have been frozen in time
I cried for spring to come but here, winter remain
I always dreamed that I would, serve high above
Where spirits lead the way, the winds will never fade
What kinda Friday, you say?
I kinda hate living in a world that values sale items more so than their neighbor. Kinda makes me despise mammon because of what it does to people...how it makes us behave. Greed is ugly indeed, oh how ugly its face. I've seen greed staring me down in aisle ten at Walmart. IT was like coming face-to-face with a bull at the Running. It felt like I'd been transported to a special layer of hell designated just for Black Friday shoppers. And honestly, with the way it makes people behave so greedy and evil just to get a good deal--like it brings out the worst of humanity just to save a buck--in an effort to have more money in their pockets and another illusion of material gain, I'm thoroughly surprised "they" (the system) haven't changed the tag name of this day yet. And if anything, with how it makes people so evil for the sake of the almighty dollar, I'm even more thoroughly surprised (if that's even possible) that it's not been changed to WHITE FRIDAY yet. I really think that would be more fitting of the day. Don't you?
Why is it even called Black Friday anyways? And where are the POC who should be offended by the name? Of all the names they could've chosen...cheap friday, shop-till-you-drop friday, stay-at-home-or-die friday, shop-at-your-own-risk friday, frugal friday, dime friday, i'd rather take a quick shot to the jugular friday, “let’s go spend the kids’ college fund, hun!” friday, beware of karen friday, nuclear aftermath friday, wake me up when friday ends friday, go blow your hard-earned money on more material crap friday...see, look at all these awesome names they could've used!
