It’s Twin Peaks day! I thought I’d share this photo from March 2022 that sort of matches the vibe of the show and also as a positive affirmation that spring will be here for us soon after the foot of snow we just got. If you look carefully you can see the trees subtle blooming that is indicative of very early spring.

The song attached is probably my most twin peaks inspired track to date. And I guess it’s somewhat inspired by a friend who died back in March of 2013 at only 21. In life we meet some people that manage to spark joy despite a living a chaotic existence. The realization that they’ve passed manifests further realizations that there were things we just didn’t know, or didn’t see happening. People often speculate what happens to a soul after the physical death of a body if anything happens at all. I often wonder more about what the in between state was like. As they transition into their next phase, how did they feel? What did they see? In moments when God is nowhere to be found, Were Angels with her?!?!?!

“What do you fear most in the world?”

“The possibility that love is not enough.”

In the lore of Twin Peaks regarding the Lodges, love and fear are painted, I’d argue deceitfully, as dichotomous, opposite emotions that open the White and Black lodges respectively. But what are we to make of Major Briggs’ biggest fear being that love is not enough? The major, who is implied to be an arbiter of sorts, a figurehead of the White Lodge.

I think this means that love and fear are not nearly so separate as we are made to believe, and, that the possibility that love is not enough is a reality.

And I think that this is the reality we are meant to realize to understand why Dale Cooper failed. Because yes, his heart was indeed FILLED with love when he entered the Black Lodge, and when he spent 25 years there, and when he traveled time and space in a pathetic, heart-wrenching attempt to save Laura Palmer, just one more chance… But he was also so so afraid. Afraid of facing himself, the reality of the evil men do, of what he could be capable of, of what he could be incapable of.

As much as he would like it to, love alone does not save people’s lives. It does not raise the dead. It does not bring peace to traumatized psyches on its own. Because love is NOT enough. There must also be action, and accountability, and discomfort, and anger, and yes, fear, but not so much fear that it leaves you immobile and indecisive or CRUEL.

Love is not enough but an over abundance of fear will make that deficit all the more potent.

There has never been an artist that has had greater influence over shaping the way I see the possibles that storytelling can be.

There is no hiding the influence he had on this show. In fact I credited him in every interview I ever gave. He brought enigmatic poetry to his films. He always created with purpose and message, no matter how seemingly obtuse. He was fearless. Never feeling the to explain his art or finding himself seduced, like so many of us would, revealing the mysteries of our art in an effort to be understood… accepted.

I will mourn his passing for the rest of my life.
