For a project in my Spanish class my teacher showed an example of what hers would be and it was titled, "La gringa con alma morena" or something like that because she studied abroad in Peru... Me and the other Latinx's in the class were ¿????¿ is this common? Something about it still doesn't sit right with me but I also understand where she is coming from based on her long term immersion in the culture. Thoughts?
A “morena” is a person with darker skin and hair coloring, so she’s basically saying that, in her heart, she is not white. That is an incredibly racist thing to say, to put it lightly. If she truly respected the culture she immersed herself in, she would not objectify the people by reducing/conflating it with their looks.
