Their amazing space resides in the Cox Cannery in Eugene's eclectic Whiteaker neighborhood. Giant press alert! 🚨 Ray Trayle was this great guy who lived out in OR. After he retired from his career as a machinist he helped artists build amazing etching presses at cost. Trayle helped the Pacific Northwest become a center for printing because of his love for building and his kind hearted nature. This particular press is 60" x 96"! Our friends @whit_print have a 48" x 96" Trayle press and it's beautiful. 😍 The press in this video is now at @printmatrix and they are so lucky to have it! . First run on the Ray Trayle press, printing art from the movement for black lives in Portland with Don't Shoot PDX. Attention West Coast visual artists! There are only four days left to apply for @biginkprints large-scale woodblock printing event at @whit_print in Eugene, Oregon. Submit a proposal by the end of the day on May 14th at www.bigink.org/apply. ~~~~~~~ The Whiteaker Printmakers studio resides in the Cox Cannery in Eugene's eclectic Whiteaker neighborhood. With a ground floor main studio and an upstairs annex, it combines to provide 2400 square feet of workspace with facilities that accommodate a variety of printmaking techniques such as etching, woodcut, monotype, collagraph, screenprint, and letterpress. ~~~~~~~ BIG INK events are a constructive way to collaborate in a creatively inspiring space while gaining an in-depth knowledge of how to create a large-scale woodblock print. The program is designed for printmakers who understand basic woodblock principles but want to expand their expertise and working scale. The program is also designed for those not yet trained in woodblock but whose visual aesthetic would lend itself to the medium. This includes illustrators, sculptors, designers, and painters who use bold contrast, strong outlines and patterning. BIG INK is pleased to announce a partnership with Whiteaker Printmakers, located at 1328 W 2nd Ave, Eugene, OR 97402, for two one-day large woodcut printing sessions Saturday and Sunday June 4th – 5th, 2016. We will be utilizing Whiteaker’s massive 48” x 96” etching press to pull prints. Artists are invited to submit a proposal to create a woodcut, at least 24” x 36” in dimension, online at www.bigink.org before March 21st, 2016.

If accepted, artists have two months prior to the event to carve their image into a piece of plywood. Lyell Castonguay and Carand Burnet, directors of BIG INK, remains in contact with the artists to provide guidance and technical support when needed. Thirteen artists will be chosen, six will print one day and seven the next. Artists may also work collaboratively to create a single woodcut, list both names on the application. Previous printmaking experience is helpful but not required.  It is free to submit your proposal! Accepted artists are required to pay a $195 materials fee.
