Tried the Ghabli trend on White Collar
For the whitecollarflashfiction prompt: support
Jones winced as he put weight on his injured knee. Despite the brace encircling it, it still ached something fierce. He shifted his stance leaning on the cane he was given to help support himself.
“Casey sure did a number on you,” Neal said, hovering nearby. “Your career as an athlete is over.”
Jones shot him a nonplussed glare.
Flag football was all fun and games until someone got hurt. In this case, Jones was the unlucky victim, colliding with a young agent from accounting in a bad tackle. He landed wrong, his right knee crumpling underneath him awkwardly.
Peter and Neal had helped him to the ER and after a few hours he was declared fit to go home. Peter wanted to stick around after but Jones had waved him off, telling him to go home to Elizabeth. He was fine on his own.
Neal offered his company, surprising them both. “I’ll look after him.”
“I don’t need looking after!” Jones huffed. “It’s just a torn ligament. I’ll be fine. Go home, you busybodies.”
“I don’t know. You hit the ground pretty hard. I'd feel better if you had someone to watch over you.” Peter deliberated. He turned to Neal. “You sure?”
“It’s not like I have anything planned this afternoon.”
“Alright, I’ll leave you to it.”
“Hey!” Jones groused. “Quit talking about me like I’m not here.” He was a grown ass man for crying out loud. He’d been taking care of himself since he left home for college.
“Chin up, Jones. It’s just for today. You’ll have your place back to yourself in no time.” Peter patted his shoulder and left him in Neal’s care.
This led to the two of them on Jones’ doorstep.
“Now who’s babysitting who?” Neal commented, smirking as he walked through the doorway.
Jones scoffed. “As if. With you in my sights we can all rest easy knowing you’re not up to anything criminal.”
Because that’s all Neal did in his spare time.
Neal’s smile was benign, and he busied himself with making room for Jones to sit comfortably.
Jones mentally kicked himself. “Hey, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it like that.”
Neal shrugged. “Yeah, you did. But it’s ok. I get that a lot.”
Jones shook his head “No, it’s not. You’re being nice to me and I’m being an ass.
“Thanks for…doing this.”
Neal’s smile turned genuine. “Don’t mention it.”
Jones settled into his chair, groaning as he did so.
Neal grabbed a pillow to put under his knee to keep it elevated. “You need anything?”
“Something to drink would be nice.”
Neal searched through his fridge and pulled out a soda. He returned to Jones' side and handed it to him.
“Thanks.” Jones sipped at his drink and watched as Neal wandered around the living room.
Last time Neal was here was after the whole thing with Van Horn. They had shared a drink and had a heart to heart. But they had been interrupted by the appearance of his ex fiance, Isabelle.
Now though, Neal had free rein to snoop around. He eyed the pictures and posters on the wall, cataloguing anything he found interesting.
“Would you stop pacing around? It’s making me nervous,” Jones joked.
“Why? Afraid I’ll find something incriminating or even better, embarrassing?” Neal teased.
Jones scoffed. “Please I’m an open book.”
“Uh excuse me, Mr ‘I hid my ex fiancé from everyone’. I think not.”
“Alright alright. I’ll tell you anything you want over a game of chess.”
“Deal.”
Neal pushed the coffee table closer to Jones and grabbed a chair for himself. He set up the board and they played a few rounds lobbing personal stories back and forth.
Jones talked about his hard to please father and even harder to please grandfather, and how joining the navy was as much for fulfilling familial expectation as it was for his own personal interest in serving a tour. In turn, Neal opened up about what it was like living on the run, answering to no one but himself, yet admitting how lonely it could be.
“Oh sure,” Jones said with some sarcasm, “I would be so depressed if I was in your shoes, eating like a king and confined to a penthouse with a view.”
“You would if you had no one to share it with.” Kate had left him then and the room he had stayed at was far more grand than the room he had shared with her on their first date. Yet, he had cherished the experience more for the time spent together than the hotel itself.
“Oh and checkmate.” Neal set down his piece and sat back smugly.
“What?!” Jones studied the board retracing his moves. When did he get the upper hand?
“Rematch!”
“Gladly.”
After a few more games, hunger set in.
“Should we order a pizza?” Jones asked, searching for his phone.
Neal considered this. “I think we can do better than that.”
An hour later, their food was delivered from a high dollar steak house.
“Wow, how did you swing this? I know we’re not paying you that good,"Jones said, taking a peek at his food.
“About that—“
Jones quickly shut him down. “Not my division.”
Neal pretended to pout and picked at his own meal.
“Well?” Jones prompted.
“Oh right. I know the owner. I helped him out of a financial crisis.”
All above board,” he added at Jones’ skeptical look. “Just offered some friendly advice. Saved him and his wife a sizable amount.”
“That’s it?”
“That’s it.”
“Huh.”
Neal shrugged. “It pays to be nice.”
“Especially when it gets you something in return,” Jones needled.
“In spite of,” Neal answered honestly.
Jones pondered his response while he ate his meal.
Afterwards. Neal rose to leave.
“I want to thank you again for today,” Jones said sincerely. “It’s been…fun.” He laughed to himself almost like he was surprised by his own admission.
“Anytime,” Neal tipped his hat, leaving him to recuperate on his own.
At long last
Gosh, we've been bad lately. And this is just a quick drive-by post, but we've made ourselves a "new season resolution" to get back into the swing of things. (It's like a new year's resolution, but we don't want to wait that long, so almost summer will have to do.)
Anyway, we're sorry for being incommunicado for so long, and we're so grateful there are still folks out here looking for the flash fiction prompts. So, for the moment, here's the June prompt, but we'll be back sometime later tonight to see what sort of shenanigans we've been missing out on!
