Domaine Damien Moyer L'Extra Brut 2018, Montlouis sur Loire. Candyfloss on the nose; remarkable. Brown sugar, maybe linoelum wax? also. Possibly lavender. Not unpleasant, let me add. A little lemon verbena as well. Nicely complex nose. First sip is a pleasure: sweetness is at the forefront, bringing more brown sugar and a little elderflower. Quite an herbaceous wine. Acidity is high, which is a treat when paired with the herbacious nose. Starts out as a light-bodied wine but surprises one with the fullness of the mouthfeel afterward. Nice legs in the glass. A gentle push from the alcohol makes it a nice companion to food; having said that, I opened the bottle as a solo experiment. This is a delightful wine for simple enjoyment. Lucien Lardy Beaujolais-Villages Chardonnay 2018. Gentle light gold in the glass. Lemon and golden apple on the nose. First sip adds a little pear and orange zest. Very light and refreshing; acidity gives this wine a tremendous boost. Light bodied, alcohol in balance with the acidity, and not too much sweetness. I had this with Julia Child's Supremes de Volaille aux Champignons except with des oignons instead of champignons, and it was perfect. Terrific wine with food; it could be a good patio wine with friends, but it's got enough heft that it begs for a food accompaniment. It'd be a shame to deny this bottle its boon. I'd sworn off Chardonnays from California years ago because I was worn out on butter. Too much for too long.
