My friend @asteroidstarfield gave me the idea of designing a bento box for Obi-Wan, and it inspired me to write this little drabbly-thing. Thanks for getting me out of my weird writers block funk!! (feat. Anakin eating bugs)
🐛🐞🐜
Obi-Wan still remembers it. Sitting in the rain, hood drawn up over his head, willing the hunger to leave him. It wasn’t doing him any good out here—he knew he didn’t have any food, and the hunger was only making him irritatingly restless and exhausted at the same time. He sunk into a quasi-meditation, trying to fall asleep, but the rain kept dripping on him.
Then, right when he couldn’t take it anymore, Anakin walked into the little cave. Where had he been, anyway? He brushed the thought aside—that didn’t matter now, now that Anakin had brought something to eat… something… wriggling?
Obi-Wan’s stomach dropped—well, actually, it growled, but the difference was negligible. His temples tightened, whether from hunger or annoyance, he didn’t know, nor did he care. They were the same feeling at that point.
He recited several different mantras internally, forcing his expression to remain only mildly annoyed.
His eyebrow lifted. Just slightly. “What is that.”
And Anakin had the audacity to smile, opening up what he’d brought onto the table before him. Crawling beetles, wriggling worms, and all the filth they lived in spread out across the napkin. “Lunch,” he answered matter-of-factly. Almost cheerily.
He popped a beetle into his mouth, and Obi-Wan lost the war on controlling his expression. “How can you eat that?”
But the way Obi-Wan remembers it, Anakin kept eating. And Obi-Wan’s eye twitched. Several times.
Now Obi-Wan sighs, standing at his kitchenette next to Anakin lounging on the couch. He thinks about bringing that memory up to Anakin as a joke, but… well. He still isn’t sure they’re on the same page, even though they’re dating now, and he doesn’t want to give Anakin any… ideas.
And anyway, right now, he’s packing himself a bento for their next mission. It’s far away, and the trip through hyperspace is going to last several days. He wants to make sure he has enough food for the journey to avoid any… well. Situations.
He pulls his yellow bento box out of a cabinet, and his eye catches on Anakin’s pink one stacked next to it. They had gotten them together when shopping somewhere on Coruscant, but Obi-Wan has rarely seen Anakin use it. Anakin usually prefers to eat whatever is easiest to bring, and he had never taken Obi-Wan up on his offers to make him a bento. Obi-Wan always assumes that Anakin just doesn’t find the flavors appealing. But, well, Anakin still has trouble inconveniencing others for his sake sometimes. Maybe Obi-Wan just needs to surprise him with one and see if he likes it.
The worst that could happen is that Obi-Wan has two bento meals for himself. As for the best that could happen… Obi-Wan smiles at the thought. He pulls the pink bento box out along with his own.
“What are you doing in there, Obi-Wan?” asks Anakin from the couch.
“Oh, nothing so exciting as the mission briefing you’re reading.”
Anakin groans.
Obi-Wan chuckles. “I’m just making lunch for our trip.”
“Still more exciting than the trade routes over Batuu, lest you fear.”
Obi-Wan hums, then opens the small kitchen fridge. He takes out some tamagoyaki he’d made earlier—yes, that will be perfect. He puts a few in each box.
Next, he quickly chops up some broccoli and puts them into another slot in each box. Obi-Wan has always enjoyed vegetables. As a child, people said that he had a “refined palette,” but he’d never thought that was accurate. Rather, he simply enjoyed the long-term benefits of a healthy meal over a simple sugar rush. Now, though, he understands that there is a way to have food provide both. He pours a sauce he’s made over the broccoli, then some sesame seeds over that. Excellent.
He looks in the pantry next, and finds some chocolate-covered almonds. He likes the ones with sea salt the best, but he knows Anakin doesn’t feel the same. Carefully, he puts a few in each: the yellow box with salt, the pink without.
Now for the main course: the noodles.
“That smells amazing in there,” says Anakin. He gets up from the couch, but Obi-Wan quickly rushes to him, pushing him back with a hand on his chest. “What?”
“You can’t come in here—you’ll spoil the surprise,” says Obi-Wan.
Anakin casts him a suspicious glance, but then he smiles with a shrug. He flops back down on the couch. “Okay.”
He trusts me so completely, Obi-Wan thinks. I can’t let him down.
He fries the noodles, putting a little extra salt in them like he knows Anakin will like, then puts them into the biggest section in their lunches.
Then he pulls some rice from the fridge. Normally, he would shape it into a ball, but… he wants to make this special.
Bentos complete, he puts them in the fridge with chopsticks, ready to go, then sits next to Anakin on the couch.
***
“You… made this for me?” asks Anakin, as they sit cross-legged on the floor of the spaceship.
Obi-Wan’s face heats. “It’s nothing,” he says. “I was going to make it for myself anyway, and—”
Anakin silences him with a kiss. “Hey. It smells delicious. I can’t wait.”
Obi-Wan flushes further, then looks down and pulls out his chopsticks.
“Is this a—” Anakin gasps. “Is this a bantha?”
Obi-Wan looks up, and Anakin is holding his rice ball with his chopsticks. “It is,” says Obi-Wan, wondering if it was too much.
“This is adorable. Actually, this is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.”
He smiles at Obi-Wan hugely, then takes an equally huge bite out of the bantha-shaped rice, taking its head clean off. He chews fervently, then takes the entire rest of the bantha into his mouth.
Obi-Wan grimaces. “You can, ah. You can have mine as well.”
Anakin’s eyes widen, then he reaches over with his chopsticks. “You sure? Thank you, Obi-Wan, you’re the best. This is delicious.” Once again, he bites into the bantha, taking its head clean off.
Obi-Wan rubs his forehead, the noodles suddenly looking a bit too much like worms. But, for both his and Anakin’s sakes, he takes a deep breath and powers through.
And this time, when he looks at Anakin enjoying his meal, the tension in his temples lessens.
100 Girlfriends is kinda fucked up in ways if you take it too seriously, so I'm glad it's obstensibly a gag comedy.
It's cartoony in ways that fits my style, so I wanted to try redesigning the characters as such where their personalities can be ascertained by a glance even by those who haven't read/watched it.
I don't know... I'm not sure if aliens are real.
As much as I love the series for getting me into Sonic in the first place, I also blame it for the initially atrocious proportions in my first pieces of fanart back in 2011. They couldn’t even keep it consistent in a single episode like this...
I was digging through my drafts and stumbled across this. No context, no nothing. I sure as shit don’t remember making this, but if I had to look at it with my own two eyes, so do you.
