Inside the surviving part of the church

The road leading through the deserted village site towards the current hamlet of Whorlton.

Recorded in the 1086 Doomsday Book, this once thriving hilltop village was steadily abandoned so that by 1600 the castle was in ruins and the village nearly deserted. The church remained in use by another village until the 1870s. Some have suggested plague as a factor for the abandonment but it may have been the development of the mining industry nearby that drew people to relocate to where more work was available.
