“I think I might be falling in love with you,” the Doctor whispered into her hair. “I know that you are going to leave, that you have to get back to future me, but I can’t seem to stop myself.”

Rose made a small noise, nuzzling into his chest in her sleep. He smiled down at her, helpless against the way his hearts flipped in his chest.

“I hope future me is sensible enough to tell you that he loves you when you can actually hear him. It would be terribly unfair for me to beat him to the punch but I’m tempted. But really, none of this is fair. I’m falling in love with you when I know you’re leaving, when I know that I’m going to have to forget these few wonderful days.”

He sighed and pressed a lingering kiss to the top of her head. “As they say, all’s fair in love and war. I suppose that covers all the things I want to say are unfair. I’m in love and hurtling towards a war that doesn’t seem winnable. I suppose I’m just glad I got to meet you.”

Rose shifted, yawning as she curled against him. “Were you saying something, Doctor? I think I fell asleep.”

“Just talking to myself,” he murmured. “Go back to sleep, love.”

“Mmm, if you insist.”

She drifted back into slumber and the Doctor held her closer, trying to treasure these moments with her while he could, trying to etch this feeling of peace into his soul so that he would remember it even when he couldn’t remember her.

He had a feeling that he would need it in the years to come.

ok anyone who hasn’t watched the end of this season look away look away spoilers

Just, you know, as a general FYI to TV writers, if you wanna explore your main character crossing the line between good and evil a bit, particularly in a show like this, that’s fine and I’m here for it.  If you feel the need to have him sexually assault his girlfriend to accomplish this, welp.  It was a good run but you’re dead to me now.  Thanks a lot.
