The Three Cookie Debacles
One:
It had been a simple trip.
One simple trip.
It had been his Christmas present to her.
He thought she would like to see a planet where it snowed blue instead of her planets white. They landed while the planet was in the middle of a festival to celebrate the first big snowfall.
She trusted to easily.
“Your nose is all fuuunnnyy from down heeerre~” She said in a sing song voice as he carried her back to the Tardis.
Clara was curled in his arms … and was so high on endorphins he thought he would have to tie her down to the Tardis pilot seat to keep her from breaking something. It seemed his control freak had lost all control.
“Why did you even eat those?” The Doctor asked his voice trying to be stern. “I hadn’t scanned them yet! They could have been poison to someone like you.”
“They looked so good though!” She says stretching out like a cat and he has to act quickly to keep from dropping her. “You know I can’t resist anything peanut flavored!”
They were referring to the cookie like treats that had caused this. She had been uncontrollably drawn to them like a child. Before he had had the chance to scan them his companion had already eaten two or three. He had scanned them and the flavor that she had thought was peanuts was a new chemical that her body did not know how to process correctly. Obviously.
The locals had found not found it offensive thank heaven above. But he hadn’t liked how some of them were staring at his travelling companion and he knew what they were thinking without ever having to touch them. It was the ‘Let’s see what will the stupid human do if we feed her more.’ So he had pushed apart the crowd not caring who he offended and picked her up by the waist and started carrying her back here.
The time lord had been so lost in thought he didn’t notice her talking until she was waving her hand in front of his face.
“You let me eat those sour blue alien fruits on Ahkaten!”
“I had scanned those!”
“You are just grumpy you didn’t get any cookies...” His impossible girl continued. “Grumpy grumpy grumpy Doctor I think it’s the eyebrows they look like grumpy eyebrows maybe they are making your brain even grumpier.” Her hand reached up to tap his forehead to punctuate every time she said the word.
When they got near the blue box covered in the lighter blue snow. He realized he would never be able to reach the key and open the door without setting her down and that would be a mistake of epic proportions seeing as how she could still run. He had spent twenty five minutes getting ahold of her again the last time. Now his only option was to readjust her and heave her over one shoulder while he snapped his other fingers to open the doors.
“This is mean grumpy Doctor!” She hollered out slapping at his back, but the angle and the drug currently rushing through her system had made her muscles so weak. He barely felt them.
Once he got near it. He flung her back over his shoulder and settled her into the pilot seat with a grunt.
“It’s okay I still love you my grumpy Doctor.” She hummed out once he had turned around back to the console.
The Doctor ignored her setting in the coordinates to take them back to her apartment. He made no comment knowing she would probably have no memory of any of these events after her little snack. By the time they slowed to a landing and he pulled the brake down. He looked back to her and saw she had fallen asleep in the seat curled in on herself. Her eyelids fluttering lost in some deep dream.
He let out a sigh and slipped his arms back under her slowly as to not jostle her awake. He walked out the Tardis doors and found he had landed in her living room. He walked down the narrow hallway to her bedroom nudging open the door with his foot thankfully he hadn’t given her time to make her bed the morning before they had left. By the height of the moon outside her window. He could tell it was right about one in the morning. He silently cursed himself. He had been trying harder to get her back at relatively the same time they had left but it seems he had taken up her whole day…again. He laid her down and yanked the blankets over her still form. The time lord stared at her small form and knew from the scan with the sonic that she would have a nasty head ache in the morning. He walked into her kitchen getting a glass of water and the bottle of pain killers setting them on her night stand.
It gave the Doctor an odd sense of déjà vu of when he had first met her with his old-younger face saving her from the Wi-Fi and how he promised she would be protected. He had laid her to sleep just like this.
“And I still love you my impossible girl.” The Doctor whispered as he kissed the crown of her head.
Two:
The brunette was rushing around the kitchen so fast she barely took notice of the Tardis materializing in her living room. Let alone when the space ship’s pilot stepped out looking around for her.
When the Doctor stepped into the kitchen raising an eyebrow at the mess. She addressed him. “Sorry Doctor but I just cannot go on an adventure not right now come back in two days once this stupid Christmas party for my class is over and I ring Nina’s neck for getting sick.” Clara said rushing to check the oven and pull out the freshest batch of sweets.
The Doctor’s other eyebrow shot up to join its friend near his hairline.
It had been sort of her fault she had forgotten to make a spot on her calendar to remember to make the cookies for the party, but just as she was going to write it down he had swept her off to go save some other planet. Now Nina was sick and couldn’t make it. So that left her alone to do both of their parts.
“Are you going to say anything?” Clara asked exasperated him just standing there staring at her as she ran back and forth was making her angry and why was she feeling the need to call his eyebrows grumpy?
“I will never understand you human’s fascination with celebrating everything with giving buckets of sugar to children.” He said walking to stand next to her looking down at the tray of treats.
“Insulting is not helping. Hop back in your blue box and come back in a couple days before you get burned.” Clara moved the hot pan over to the cooling rack grabbing the spatula to scoop them off the pan and put them next to the others.
“Why not let them cook in the Tardis engine?”
She matched his raised eyebrows with her own.
“Oh yeah bad memories huh?” The Doctor said the excitement deflating out of his voice.
“You think?” She hissed moving back to the mixing bowl giving it another stir she placed more pieces on the pan.
He watched her move back to the oven placing the next batch in. He winced when she let out a hiss as her thumb brushed the hot coil then cradled her hand to her chest. He took her by the wrist gently shutting the oven door as he pulled her to the sink sticking her hand under the running cold water he had become so accustomed to her kitchen he knew exactly what drawer to dig in for what he needed.
He turned the water off pulling her and to him.
“No Doctor its fine just a tiny burn.” She had had plenty over the years working on her failed soufflés.
“Hush. They don’t call me the Doctor for nothing.” He bopped her on the head with one hand rubbing the blister cream on her hand with the other. He took a step back looking her over. Her apron was covered in flour and chocolate sauce. He let out a sigh then continued. “Tell me what I need to do so we can get on with it as fast as possible.” He said looking at all of the bowls and pans.
“Are you sure? Doctor you can leave if you want I am sure there are a million other things more interesting out there then helping me make candy for 8 year olds.” She said going to mix the cookie dough again.
“I wouldn’t have offered if I didn’t want to, Clara.” He said sniffing at one of the bowls.
Clara let go of the breath she was holding in a huff. “Fine.”
So they worked side by side. He did everything she asked with little comment stirring this and putting stuff in and taking stuff out of the oven (he had practically banned her from touching it again).
When the last batch of cookies was in the oven. The Doctor plopped onto the couch brushing the flour out of his gray hair and jumper. He dug his yoyo out of his pants pocket rolling it up in the air and back again. Then he felt Clara plop down next to him. Her head fell onto his shoulder in exasperation and he had to admit he was too tired to correct her.
“My class are going to love them I think. Thank you Doctor.”
“Don’t mention it.”
Three:
The Doctor was happy he didn’t need much sleep superior Gallifreyan biology and all that jazz. It didn’t mean he didn’t love laying with his wife curled into his chest it was a nice peaceful reservoir from their daily adventures. In this body he would almost say that he enjoyed the slow quiet moments more than the running around on some strange alien planet.
He had almost fallen back into a dreamlike state when he heard an almost inaudible scrapping noise. He shot up on bed kissing his wife’s bob of short brown hair making sure it hadn’t woke her.
His feet made no noise as he padded toward the door pulling on his robe. He stepped into the hall. Leaning into the room across the hall and when he saw the beds empty he let out a grunt pinching the ridge of his nose as he walked down the hall toward where the squeaking noise was coming from.
He stood in the door way of the kitchen and saw one of the dining table chairs moving slowly across the floor. Though he couldn’t see the movers therefore they couldn’t see him do to the kitchen island in between them. He had a pretty good guess at who -or in this case two who’s- it could be.
He had tried to be strict from the moment that little plus sign had appeared it had happened once. Just once an alien planet shape shifters and they had just been so happy to see that the other was alive and okay. They had fallen into each other and now her stomach was smoothly jutting from her hips. Showing the five months since. Well – He didn’t really have a word for it though neither of them considered it a mistake.
He was strict though on some things no travelling. Was rule one for her and he stuck by her side almost all of the time he didn’t want to miss a second it felt like the universe was finally paying up on it’s side of the favor. When the baby started getting active though it was from 0 to 80 nothing could get him – Clara was so sure it was a boy – to calm down except the humming of being in the ship.
One day she was sitting on the pilot seat reading to the baby and he just stood leaning on the console playing with the yoyo again making playful comments about the story she was reading. When the baby started jumping around more.
“Ugh your child is going to drive me insane in four days let alone for months!” She said rubbing her stomach “Wait – Is she laughing at us?” Clara asked pointing up at the ceiling of the ship and glancing between it and the Doctor.
He circled the console making sure all of the levers were in the same place. Then looked back up at the ceiling with the same confusion. “I am not sur- ow!” The screen had seemed to move on it’s own to bump into his shoulder.
He pulled it over in front of him his shoulders blocking her vies of it though when he froze up pointing back at the ceiling “No! no that’s not possible!” He shouted at the ceiling. As if to prove him wrong her biologic information appeared in small text in the corner of the screen.
“Is something wrong with the baby?” Clara asked the panic jumping into her voice as her hands cradled her stomach. She eased off the seat trying to see around him.
“No nothing is wrong necessarily…” He trailed off his eyes focusing and losing focus but still stuck on the screen.
“It just looks like someone decided to stop playing hide and seek with her brother.”
Because on the screen was an ultrasound. Two healthy growing babies. And four heartbeats perfectly synched between them.
The Doctor shook the memory from his mind as he saw where the chair was being pushed towards there as a plate of sweets sitting on the counter for their guests coming over for Christmas dinner the next day.
He had to let out a small chuckle at the cleverness of the toddlers. He walked over and leaning over the thin kitchen island grabbed the back of the chair plucking it out of their tiny hands.
Two pairs of wide identical blue eyes looked up into his own. From under mops of their mother’s brown hair.
“Theresa, Theodore would you like to explain what you were doing?” He glanced at the clock on the oven. “And at 4 am as well?”
“Time is relative daddy!” Theresa was the first to speak.
He had to admit that shocked him he slid the chair into the island coming around to crouch in front of them.
“And where did you learn that from?”
“From you of course!” There was her brother’s voice.
“And we were hungry!”
“You two couldn’t wait until me and your mother woke up?”
He was answered with two heads shaking like crazy their brown hair flying out from them.
He looked between the two of them always amazed that they were real. They had his blue eyes their mother’s hair and dimple in their left cheek. Their grandfather’s nose and they stood at two foot nothing dressed in identical blue and purple striped pajamas.
He went back to rubbing the bridge of his nose it had been so long since he had raised kids specifically half human – half Gallifreyan children where was his manual on this?
“Uh oh daddy has his my kids are too smart for their own good look again!”
He glanced at them again. They were.
“Mommy taught us that!”
Then they turned on the doe eyes.
He let out a sigh there was no point arguing with them they had inherited both his and their mother’s stubbornness.
“Fine.” He grabbed one of the chocolate chip cookies then gathering one baby in each arm he walked to the table settling them down breaking the cookie in half. “You can each have half then you are going back to bed but do not tell your mother.”
Arms circling his waist he heard the voice he loved most in the world combined with his children’s giggling. “Do not tell their mother what, Doctor?”
(Okay if you can’t tell that last one got a bit away from me and started writing itself.)
