I have nothing I haven’t already published on AO3 to use for this so I’ll use something from the last chapter of something I published (the first chapter of a new historical AU I recently started against my better judgment):

She cannot hear their voices through the thick pane of glass but their posture and the tilt of their heads make her think they’re speaking to one another in very hushed tones indeed.

“Oh look,” Donna says, her eyes fixed on something Rose cannot see.  She sounds surprised.  “He’s already here.”

“Who’s already here?” Rose asks.

Instead of answering her Donna pulls out a key from the front pocket of her uniform and turns it in the lock of the door.

“You’ll see,” she says, smirking.

WIP Meme

The rules are as follows: go to page 7 of a WIP, skip to the 7th line, share 7 lines (or however much you want) and tag 7 more writers to continue the challenge.

I was tagged by @whowhatsitwhich, writer and badass extraordinaire. The following is from chapter three of Everything You Are:

Tilting her head, Katniss considers Lark and his words. “You killed someone. Someone M wanted dead.”

“Any word yet?” Lark asks instead of answering her question, nodding towards her phone on the bar between them. A flash of knowing races through her. The rigidity of his shoulders and the hard expression on his face reveal that she’s right.

“That means you are halfway—″

“I’m not halfway to anything. Technically, I wasn’t MI6 yet, so it didn’t count,” Lark cuts her off before repeating his question. “Any word yet?”

Knowing she’s hit on a nerve, Katniss’ instincts scream at her to keep plucking until she gets the whole story. Part of her is angered that he doesn’t seem to trust her yet…then again, she still has a few secrets of her own. But it is the pained look in Lark’s eyes that ultimately prevents her from pushing. She shifts in her seat, conflict raging inside her mind. With how painful her own reasons for joining MI6 are, Katniss eventually chooses to let it drop for now and checks her phone once more.

“Stop eating all the popcorn!” She grabbed at the giant bowl, leaning forward to tickle his ribs a little as distraction. His instinctive jump jostled her legs, which were tossed across his lap, covered by a fleece blanket.

“This fuckin’ show makes me nervous,” he replied, jamming another buttery handful into his mouth. “What about his daughter? What if that biowhatever thing kills him before the redheaded chick can figure out where he is?”

“I can’t believe you!” Carol exclaimed, licking salt off the end of her finger.

“Why, what’d I do?”

“You’re a total shipper!”

“I’m what now?”

“A shipper. You want Jack and Renee to do it.” She pushed her knee gently into his stomach, smirking. “It’s cute!”

“Pft, is that her name?” He pretended to ignore Carol, staring at the screen while Jack somehow managed to kill a couple guys even though he’d been unconscious seconds before. After a pause, Daryl said under his breath, “But every goddamn time they’re in the same room, I’m waitin’ for something to go up in flames.”

“Shipper,” she whispered, a tiny giggle escaping as she stuffed more popcorn into her mouth.

“Found it.” He pressed the soft, frayed square of cloth into Carol’s hands, surprised he’d managed to get even those two words out after spending the last twenty minutes running four times through the entire town, trying to retrace Carl’s afternoon walk and find Judith’s precious blanket. (Not that more words would have mattered anyway, what with the impressively loud wails coming in siren-like bursts from her tiny, tear-stained self.)

“Thank you.” Carol quickly settled the blanket under Judith’s head, letting the baby grab the soft edges the way she always did when she was exhausted and more than ready to give in to sleep. Judy hiccuped and went quiet, nuzzling her head into both the blanket and Carol’s neck.

The sudden silence in the living room was almost startling.

Carol continued to pace, probably afraid to disturb the peace. He watched her hand make soothing circles over the electric purple giraffes on Judith’s pajamas. After a second, she quirked an eyebrow at him and said, “You’re such a marshmallow for her.”

“Shut up,” he muttered with exactly no conviction, trying to fight the smile he could feel tempting his face as he watched the baby’s eyes blink shut.

She wasn’t the only woman in the room he was a marshmallow for.
