The Horse & His Boy

Have you ever read C.S. Lewis’s The Horse & His Boy? There’s the link to purchase it if you haven’t...because you should. It’s my favorite in the Narnia series so far (although I haven’t finished the series yet...). 

If you have read the book, do you remember the part when Shasta comes into Narnia hungry and exhausted with an urgent message that the enemy’s army is rapidly approaching? When he does the animals of Narnia take no charge or notice. They were quite pleasant and as nice as they could be but no one took initiative to prepare Shasta food (he hadn’t eaten in a while) nor to carry the message to the Kings & Queens of Narnia. It wasn’t until the Stag and Dwarf came that action was taken. They knew the urgency of the message and they knew the power of the Lion so that they immediately were compelled to action, and ran off to notify the Kings & Queens. 

How often does the Church act in the same way? We may be very pleasant, endearing, and kind to revivalists or to evangelists or to visitors but we don’t feel the need to take their message further. There is no urgency to our actions, no urgency to our sharing. No urgency. Have we forgotten the power of the One who is to come? Have we forgotten that we are in a battle and the enemy’s forces are rapidly advancing claiming the hearts and souls of those around us with lust, greed, pride, self-righteousness, and covetous cultures? 

Who will be the ones who recognize the power of the Lion - the power of the High King, Almighty God - and will run to alert others sharing the news? The news that, indeed, Aslan is on the move.
