What Happened to the Beach? - Declan McKenna
I’m doing a little project with my friend where we listen to albums from 2024 as review them! Yes it’s inspired by James Acaster’s book (which you should read). And finally, feel free to give us album recommendations from last year — my askbox is always open! Anyway, on with my actual thoughts.
This is the DEFINITION of a summer album, with such a bright sound and fun lyricism to give you a well deserved break after heavier albums. I wasn’t exactly surprised by the negative reaction to this album but a little disappointed. I feel like people are expecting this to be much more than it was meant to.
My personal favourites are the songs with a lot of energy and cracking baselines but that’s no surprise to anyone. I do think the songs work better alone than in the album and I’m not sure why but it’s probably just personal preference. Declan experiments with synths and acoustics to add a more pop sound to 60s rock, and it creates a unique album overall that I really liked. It’s not perfect but it’s still worth a listen in my opinion, especially if you like what I’ve said so far.
