There’s half a skull with protruding horns on his head, and bones and teeth and leathers and swathes of fur and warpaint over the rest of him, but it isn’t his savage-looking armor that’s causing the thrill hammering in her ribcage.

It isn’t even the way their bodies are quashed together in the insufferable Faronian heat, chests heaving, as he presses her into the tree bark, shielding her as best he can from the onslaught of wild animals rushing past them in an absolute fury.

It’s the look he’s giving her out of the corner of his cutting blue eyes, half-feral, half-incredulous, as if to ask, How is it that you keep getting yourself into so much trouble, and I’m always having to drop everything to come and save you?

okay so like the reason I’m so obsessed with antagonists is because I have an overdeveloped sense of empathy

no hear me out

protags get excused for all sorts of stuff bc we know their backstory, so we’re like “of course you were a dick, that’s totally understandable under the circumstances”

but with antagonists you don’t know all their backstory so you just think they’re a dick for no reason? but like, everyone has a reason for being a dick? and it may not be a good reason, but the protag’s wasn’t that good either?

like, nobody goes out in the morning like “I’m gonna be evil today.” everyone’s just trying their best given what they know and what their circumstances are

and in the real world it’s super complicated to try and excuse people for their actions, bc actions have consequences and they hurt people

but when they’re only hurting fictional people it’s really fascinating to dig in and be like, why are you like this, can I redeem you, can you fall in love with the person I most identify with so that we can kiss by proxy, etc
