20 Why Am I Afraid of Love? A movement piece with text from Eugene O’Neill, dir by Pete Guither and choreographed by Laurie Merriman. So since I was in Bloomington Normal for the summer, and I was only doing one show, the opportunity came up to audition for this piece. Dance, movement set to text from Eugene O’Neill plays. Along with projections on bodies. I hadn’t had to move/dance since the tap number in Oklahoma four years earlier, so quite frankly, I didn’t like my chances, but somehow got cast anyway. Once again, if anyone had told me when my school year ended in May, that by the end of the summer, I would be wearing a dance belt - only - and reciting Eugene O’Neill poetry in the ISU art gallery, I would have been concerned for their health. But I’ve discovered the big changes come quickly and unexpectedly. Sadly, I have no photos from this process (or as I said earlier, this summer) but you can check out Pete’s photography work at http://thelivingcanvas.com (nsfw). The other thing I remember about this process was at the end, Laurie the choreographer, said (jokingly) “I love actors, you tell them to do something and they try it. Dancers would have said no to half that stuff.” #retrospective #whyamiafraidoflove #peteguither #lauriemerriman #eugeneoneill #isuartgallery #dancebelt #1991 #isu #isutheatre #redbirdsflyinghigh (at Illinois State University) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4hjPk4JYeZ/?igshid=wcxah1kkkgkt
