so in sweden we write the name of the norse gods and beings in modern swedish

like we do not have th-sounds anymore in swedish, so we write tor forexample. because, we sit and try to prounance the names as if we are speaking iron age old norse/swedish?

thats just..... odd.

but anyway! i have noticed that the english translators of snorris edda etc, appear to just take the name straight from like... how snorri spelled them in medieval icelandic i assume (because from some fast googling i could see modern icelandic do not even spell the names like that!)

i feel bad for you, that have to try to prounance Baldr, (which is Baldur in modern icelandic btw, and Balder in modern Swedish) which is basically impossible in modern swedish fyi.

also, runic futhark writing enjoyed dropping those wovels, and omitting many letters. guys, snorri might not even said Baldr, he could just be dropping vowels, according to an older runic writting tradition, because who needs vowels anyway?

i just feel bad for you, writing the names of norse mythology in archaic names forms. its not the medieval age anymore, yes?

so anyway! let me list some of them in modern swedish, just to show why, when i see some spell it Baldr i go: “oh honey, do not make stuff so difficult for yourself!”

note! that we in the nordic family group, all spell the names in norse mythology differently today. and prounance it differnetly. ya know, language development and all.

so this are some examples of names from norse mythology as they are spellt today in swedish. exemples are from when snorre lists of personal names among the gods of asgård (so disclaimer snorri can be wrong about who are gods etc, but this is about the name forms, not about who are gods and not):

Oden, Tor, Balder, Njord, Tyr, Brage, Heimdall, Höder, Vidar, Vale, Ull och Forsete.

Frigg, Saga, Eir, Gefjon, Fulla, Freja, Sjöfn, Lofn, Vår, Vör, Syn, Hlin, Snotra och Gnå.

and example using the name of our sweet midgård snake aka jörmundgand

old norse: Miðgarðsormr

modern icelandic: Miðgarðsormur

modern swedish: Midgårdsormen

old norse: Jǫrmungandr

modern swedish: Jörmungand

modern icelandic: Jörmungandur

my suggestion!

please, stop spelling old norse names, in a casual setting, as if you have travelled back in time a 1000 years. you do not need to! there is a much easier path, than to spell like you live during the medieval age (or iron age...).

too much archaic spelling, with these old norse names in norse mythology translations!

i tell my clients that the easiest way to get in touch with me is by email or text because i get phone calls ALL DAY LONG and they are usually for 45 minutes to an hour each. what does this complete hard-headed fool do, calls me all day from 8 am until 3 and i've missed every single one. when i've had chunks of time i call back...he doesn't answer. he's just ignoring the texts and emails i've sent as well ☹☹☹☹☹
