Sanjana’s lips tighten as she pushes questions about whether she even counts as a human to the back of her mind, knowing it’s not what he meant by the sentence, “I can’t afford to make mistakes,” she says, her voice barely above a whisper but she knows he heard her anyway, “I’m the only line of defence.”

          she’s   grateful   she’d   gotten   milo   home   before   dark.   but   she’s   also   regretting   allowing   him   to   convince   her   to    read   a   couple   books   to   him   before   bed   because   now   she’s   walking   home   alone.   in   the   dark.   and   harmonia   doesn’t   live   in   the   upper   east   side   where   CRIME   is   unheard   of.   she   resides   in   a   sketchy   neighborhood    on   the   fourth   floor.   so   the   walk   from   the   safety   of   the   subway   is   one   that   makes   her   heart   pitter patter   and   her   eyes   dart   from  left   to   right   and   up   and   down   RELENTLESSLY.

          but   what   GOD AMONG MEN   is   scared    of   mere   mortals   ?   well,   one   that   is   so   DESPERATELY   trying   to   FIT IN.   though,   alas   there   is   no   need   to   worry   !   she   sees   one   of   her   many   neighbors   on   the   stoop   of   their   building   and   she   is   CALMED.

          ‘     were   you   waiting   for   me   ?     ‘     she   teases,   only   to   try   and   get   him   to   like   her.   he   didn’t   seem    to   like   ANYONE   really.     ‘     i   should   have   called,   I KNOW.     ‘     her   keys   open   the   front   and   she   lets   her   body   hold   the   door   open,     ‘     are   you   coming   in   ?   i   have   coffee.     ‘     @wickcdhands   did   not   ask   but   is   receiving.

❛ &. ┊ “ I suppose you thought I was joking, ” but, alas, was a promise never given with the intention to break it and while the parting of lips allowed a pointed tongue to slowly be coated with the liquor he’d ordered, would fingertips dig into the pocket of a jeans to withdraw a business card with beautifully simplistic design -- offered, naturally, with the upward curvature of lips. “ But the night’s young, the next round of drinks is on me. You still haven’t told me what brought you here -- it’s a terribly shabby town. Even I’m only passing through. ”
