i've been thinking about you recently, but i'm also super fucking weird about reaching out to talk to people. that being said – hello, and i hope you're doing well 🫶
hiiiiiiiiiiii👋 how are you??? how has your hedwig-ness been???
hello darling i'm in your asks to be stupid!
assign favorite food/snack/drink to hedwig and yitz (and tommy if you wanna!!! he's important too). I find the little gas station order posts for characters so charming and i deeply trust your analytical opinions. go crazy!!!!!!
ohhhhhhh kayyyyy........i am not a chef of any kind so my analyses do not live up to the symbolism of foods...
ok so hedwig would like Very Fancy food. but she never gets to eat it (they can't fucking afford it bruh) but luther took her out to eat in a luxurious international restaurant while on the road and she had loved that ever since. she now associates it with him/ richer and more privileged people in her life and i personally think she'd eat it whenever she could just so she can disassociate a bit and imagine she was a different person?????? like an escape?????? i'm making this too deep. but she just sticks to cheap shit like corner café food for 2 dollars.
yitzhak. yitzhak would like some traditional croatian foods. like a comfort food. i think it would bring back memories for him, maybe of his childhood or a source of comfort for him when he was younger (it was really rough in croatia and i think he would have found it a comfort? or like just a temporary joy). i found something like stuffed peppers would be a source of comfort. it is a filling food which also isn't that hard to make. he wishes he could cook, or at least find it for cheap in america, so he can recollect these memories.
last but not least, tommy.... i think tommy would eat the most unhealthy shit known to man. insane amounts of fast food. energy drinks. instant cookers... you'd think he'd have 15 liver maladies by now. i think that is because his parents are neglectful so they never cooked actual food for him so he had to stick to those foods or nothing, because he can easily fix those and eat them. i think it's a stark contrast to hedwig's food choices, who tries to avoid these choices as much as possible
I would like to hear about the wicked little town parallel stuff and what it means!!
okay... so i've got multiple theories about what it could mean, i think it might depends on production (or even whoever plays hedwig/tommy):
so here i'm mostly going off the broadway + NT productions, cuz that's where i first noticed it. i found it could be two different things:
an indicator of hedwig's influence on tommy; as in, hedwig has spent so much time with tommy, and shaped him into the person he is by the time of the concert. her walking into his life perhaps might have changed the trajectory of his life, his perception of self, etc etc.. with her teaching him 'everything he knows' about music, giving him the cross, and being a heavy influence on him. maybe that was so significant to him, that he'd even adopted the mannerism she'd ended the song she introduced herself with and actually given herself depth through, if that makes any sense? since WLT was the song she'd used to show the things she wanted from someone, and WLTR was his way of showing her what she needed.
a signal that WLTR is mostly of hedwig's personal conscience, instead of someone else telling her this. this is her other half within herself communicated what she might have forgotten all along, that her actual completion comes from within, instead of someone else having to do it for her. the kiss is a message from her self to her, telling her that no matter what happens, she can be whole. because no matter how broken she would be, she can 'take the pieces off the ground, and show this wicked town something beautiful and new'.
now, this specific view comes from my friend/ homie telling me this about the production they saw, where not only hedwig blows tommy a kiss/ tommy does the same, but during midnight radio, she blows yitzhak a kiss right after giving him the wig, and krystal does the same right before hedwig leaves the stage, and this is a POV i had of it:
the kiss heralds one's ability to be whole. to be free, without having to 'give up a little part of oneself'; hedwig is allowing tommy to be free. tommy (or herself, depending on how this specific character is viewed by said point) allows her to be free. she, in turn, allows yitzhak to be free by being who the person he found comfort in being. then yitzhak, as krystal, his 'free' self, has her be free and not be shackled by the obligations of her so-called 'freedom'. do you see what's happening here? it's a cycle, that's the main theme of the story. that choice, i think, makes it more clear, and does indicate the pre-existing cycle that hedwig is breaking and the new one she is creating and allowing others to create.
maybe i'm talking too much! but this is how i saw it. feel free to add your own, if you'd like! i love these little details so much! so fucking cool
okay, i'm nine hours late, but you requested asks about hedwig, so here i am 🫶
are there any particular lines/lyrics from hatai that other people may overlook, but stand out to you as poignant? for instance, one of my favorite lines from the original off broadway production is "i am divorced, i am penniless, i am a woman... i cry like a little boy." it never fails to devastate me.
oh i have alot (overanalyzer) but let me think up one really quickly
to take one i think the line "who's that hedwig and why have we never heard of her before, jerry (bob in the off-b'way iteration)? well that's a question i've been asking myself for years now" would work for this
i know some people see it as a more comedic line, but i've always thought of it as a more deep one, seeing hedwig's history and life and how she'd lived... it contributes to the fact that hedwig doesn't even know who she is!!!! her identity has been so distorted by people surrounding her to the point where who she actually is, is a mystery to even her
im going through a huge Hedwig fixation rn and your blog is super awesome btw and i was wondering what the context of “ketchup” was about in your pinned post :0 ?
during lena hall’s run as hedwig, she had this joke where when she would introduce the band members, she’d call skzsp ‘ketchup’. this joke, with other hedwigs, would be different for each. for example, during john cameron mitchell’s return to the role, hedwig would call skzsp ‘the sound of crumbs being swept off a table’ (half asleep so not word for word). i just thought ketchup would be funny, as the banter in that scene would always make me laugh lol
++ thanks for the compliment <3 glad to talk about hedwig any time if you’d like ;)
hi goat…🥹 how r u doing
i'm doing well!!! so tired. so FUCKING BUSY!!!!! ihefukgjehrjnv thuikejrsnuikjm
how about you
hello, my friend!!! i've come bearing hedwig asks in your time of need <3
obviously, yitzhak is a massive theater lover, as is shown in both the staged version, and the film version. my question to you is this: aside from the obvious answers, like "rent," and "yentl," what do you think some of yitzhak's favorite musicals would be?
he is such a theater lover/kid.
yitzhak would be quite fond of a variety of musicals. i think he'd like maybe older musicals and maybe some darker work. i've always felt that he'd like AIDA, not the opera, but the 2000 musical (definitely not me projecting). he'd also like funny girl (barbra streisand fan much? he's seen maybe every movie she's been) and maybe some other classic musicals as well (like the sound of music!!! ... maybe). kind of a guilty pleasure, i suppose. he'd also like some loud musicals or just flashy things, on the occasion.
let me know what else you think he'd like!
