Why don't more people talk about the Wicker King? I swear the fandom is sitting idle somewhere, there is no way such a soul-crushing book has not gained traction somewhere. Its a perfect representation of undying devotion and as August himself put it, jumping into the rabbit hole voluntarily. It also perfectly describes how neglected children end up leaning on each other, feeling everything more deeply and having nobody other than an inexperienced child to help them through their struggles. Its no wonder August and Jack love each other, they have nobody else to love. Not to mention Rina and the Twins's role in the novel, and how while they know about the condition and would send Jack to the hospital in a heartbeat, something about August's desperation to fix jack makes them support him. Also why does August feel the need to fix Jack, well its because Jack is his everything, it's all he is ever known and all he is is his caretaker. I also almost feel like Rina comes so close to cracking him, to help him realize that he can't always save jack and jack is in no place to save himself. I could rant about this book for hours. I need someone who gets it oh my god.
I’m only a little way through Summer Sons but Andrew and Eddie give off the same energy as August and Jack from Wicker King.
Has anyone ever read the Wicker King by K. Ancrum? Because FUCK, I would have been less taken out by being hit with a bag of fucking bricks
They'll learn how to love each other with fingertips instead of claws. They will build a home and a life together, and there they'll heal and grow.
Wicker king by K. Ancrum
Title: The Wicker King
Author: K Ancrum
Summary: When August learns that his best friend, Jack, shows signs of degenerative hallucinatory disorder, he is determined to help Jack cope. Jack’s vivid and long-term visions take the form of an elaborate fantasy world layered over our own—a world ruled by the Wicker King. As Jack leads them on a quest to fulfill a dark prophecy in this alternate world, even August begins to question what is real or not.
August and Jack struggle to keep afloat as they teeter between fantasy and their own emotions. In the end, each must choose his own truth.
Rating: ★★★★☆
Review:
I really have no idea what I felt reading this book. Partly anxiety because of all the mental health stuff and medical stuff. I thought Jack and August’s relationship was pretty toxic and not very healthy. I’m not really into the super edgy, angsty, life-fucking-sucks style of books but it wasn’t bad. I enjoyed reading this. It kept me going. I think I liked the side characters more. The twins, Rina and Alex mostly. So I guess I’m giving this four out of five stars.
