2026 reading checkpoint

I have only managed to read about 6 books this year. It’s very stressful. I know I still have time, but that’s such a little number. (Thank you for tagging me @alpineshift 🩵)

What's your best/fave book so far?

I don’t know if I would say this is my favorite, but this is the one I couldn’t stop thinking about. Like, picked it up as a quick little “I’ll read a chapter before bed” and barely finished it before my alarm went off for work the next morning. I did enjoy it and will most likely reread it some point soon tbh

I read this for a class in either high school or college and reread it recently. I wouldn’t say it’s a *fun* read but it is worth reading I think if you’re in a good place for it.

For all that the 1800s etiquette guides are--obviously--derangedly sexist from a modern perspective? They're also mindblowing in how casually they will assert things that MODERN DAY CONSERVATIVES would scream and cry and shit their pants about.

"People back then always married young it's natural!!!" Every single 1800s guide I've ever met casually mentions that, of course, you really shouldn't get married before you're at least 20, and waiting until 25 is usually better.

Or, like. Okay here's a long segment:

Just firmly going "it is crazy sexist to blame The Wife for overspending when thirty seconds of asking questions will immediately establish that her husband was outright lying to her about how much money they had. Talk to your wife like a normal person."

Or--okay, here. A section on being honest and not writing love letters in secret, because that's usually a good sign that there's something untoward going on....

....except that he then immediately acknowledges that sometimes, the reason you're hiding this from your parents is that your parents suck. That there are parents who frankly have not earned the right to approve or disapprove of your partner.

(I realize the phrasing there sounds a lot less strong than my summary, but--trust me on this. When you're familiar with the narrative voice of these kinds of books, this passage is downright radical. The mere acknowledgement that if you treat your kids badly, it's your own damn fault when they don't talk to you? I've genuinely never seen that before in this genre. Don't freak out over "properly trained", either. It's just a linguistic shift--at the time, "training" was used the way we would say "raising" a child today. )

HI EVERYBODY!!!! in honor of the few comments on this post about wanting a black ring, i would like to remind everybody that if you have any ring and some black nail polish, you can have a black ring :D actual black rings are hard as fuck to find but you can keep the cheap ones black or use one you already have with the help of some occasional repainting :) i’ve been doing this for years and it’s both easy and cheap! highly recommend :)

I love that idea! And I would like to add that if you have a metaphysical or gem shop in your area, then there is another solution: rings made of pretty rock! Most of these types of stores will have a basket of rings carved and smoothed from different types of rocks. For black, you usually find them in obsidian or sometimes black tourmaline or jet. I'm sure there are others, too. Of course, they can't be resized and don't really swell or shrink with heat/cold, but I have a couple of them that fit different fingers and I love them. ^_^ They're also not very expensive. I think I got my last one for around 10 USD.
