Getting Ready For July
For the past 11 years I have worked at the Wickerman Music Festival to help construct and decorate the Acoustic Village. The Village is run by friends and the I am part of crew is made up of many people I consider to be extended family. I have a wonderful time there and really enjoy being able to help out with the decorations. The festival takes place in July, and although we have many decorations kept in storage, it’s around this time that I start gathering ideas for new decorations that I can make in advance.
Back in April I travelled to Venice to celebrate my best friend’s birthday. Amongst the crowded streets and canals we found hundreds of different stalls selling beautiful Venetian masks. I took a picture of one stall in particular (with permission from the owner of course), several of the masks for sale were surrounded by brightly coloured, shimmering leaves. They looked wonderful and are the perfect thing to hang up around the Acoustic Stage.
Our most recent theme for décor within the Acoustic Village is “A Midsummer’s Night Dream,” the old lanterns painted to look like planets have gone and have been replaced with a giant bird mobile and some wonky toadstools. The leaves surrounding the Venetian masks I saw will fit in wonderfully with the forest theme, now I just have to make them.
I am not confident enough in my abilities to claim that I can replicate what was being sold on the mask stall in busy Venice, however I am going to take inspiration from the design and will hopefully create something similar, that is not half bad. I’ve got a range of paints, some leaf shaped card I have cut out and some small masks, meaning that this weekend I am ready to get stuck in and get back in touch with my artistic side.
2015 is going to be an unreal year; passing my driving test, wickerman festival, exams over, i turn 18, going to cancun, another year with my perfect matthew, his 21st, dads 50th, hopefully going away with the girls, leaving school, starting college and enjoying every single minute experiencing so many different things!
