Happy wip Wednesday I'm doing a writing experiment where I wanted to play with people having a conversation about one thing that's actually about another thing, without ever outright talking about what they're really talking about.
So this is (post campaign 2) Caleb trying to convince Veth to have an affair with him:
“Yeza will be back soon. He and Luc went… he likes pie. I’m trying to make him a pie. And I keep fucking it up.”
“I’m afraid I won’t be much help in making one. But, I have been a poor guest. I didn’t even bring a gift. Let me buy one for you.”
“You want to buy a pie? For my husband?”
“If we hurry, we can put it in the oven and let him think you made it. It could be our little secret.”
“I think we could fool him.”
“I… a good wife should know how to make her husband’s favorite treats.”
“I think you are a good wife.”
“Essek mentioned you were talking about a fight. And now there are pastries for him… is everything okay?”
“A fight? Is that what I told him? I… I was exaggerating. I talk, sometimes.”
“You can spin a yarn when you drink.”
“It makes you bold, too.”
Veth takes a small step away from Caleb. He holds out both hands, as if offering peace, or perhaps to show that he is no longer holding the letter. The pie, woefully undercooked and smeared on the floor between them, is slowly scooped off of the floor by nearly-invisible hands. Veth focuses on taking off her oven mitts and setting them on the counter.
“I’m a happily married woman. I’m just doing something nice for my husband.”
“Do you even like…” Caleb eyes the filling on his boots, “pie?”
“Yeza likes pie. I’m not that fond of sweet things.”
“Sweet is good,” Caleb adds, “but I don’t want it all of the time. I know you don’t either.”
