If you're still doing prompts,, "You love me so fiercely, I'm almost afraid of it" for Operator maybe? 🙈
There’s a vulnerability, as fleeting as ripples on water, that will periodically flash across his eyes. Perhaps you’ve caught him off guard with a comment; perhaps you’ve held his hand a bit too tightly; or, perhaps, he caught you looking at him with an expression that combines joy with adoration.
Then, as quickly as that vulnerability appears, it’s pushed away, as though it never existed to begin with.
You once asked him directly why he seemed so unsure of himself. He had responded with a laugh that didn’t quite reach his eyes before turning away, effectively ending your conversation. You had remained sitting by his side as silence washed over the both of you.
It felt like you were underwater, watching those ripples pass by.
“Why do you turn away when I say it?” Dusk is setting behind the smog, painting the sky in a faint orange hue. If the clouds were to dissipate, you would be able to see the sun gradually sinking into the ocean you stand in front of. The waves lap over your feet and you wrap your arms around yourself to hide away from the bitter sea breeze.
He laughs again—a faint, strained noise—as he pushes his hands further into his pockets. When you look at him, he’s staring out at the ocean and refusing to meet your gaze. “What do you mean, when you say it?”
“When I say I love you.” You quip back your response almost immediately, and you don’t miss the flinch that passes over his face. The gesture sinks your heart into your stomach and you press your lips together to hold back your remarks.
“Ah,” he murmurs. Ah. A fake, filler response, put in place by someone who doesn’t have the right words on their tongue. Silence falls once more, broken only by the sounds of the waves hitting the shore.
“Because I’m afraid,” he hums, tipping his head back to look at the sky. The setting sun battles through the clouds to wash his body aglow with a golden hue, making him look as if he’s more ethereal than human. He seems far away from you now that he might as well be nothing but a ghost. “You love me so fiercely, I’m almost afraid for it. I’m afraid this fire will consume me, and then you and I will both be nothing but ash in the end.”
He falls silent with these words, and the waves continue to brush against the shore.
