Mind-control whump

Whumpee being incapacitated and the rest of the team having to figure out what to do in their place while tending to them

Past coming back to bite the whumpee

Emotional whump.

Team as family whump.

Whump where the protagonist / whumpee has to admit their vulnerability.

Tragically wanting to help whumpee comfort whump

How did you find the whumpblr community?

I honestly have no idea 😂 My memory is so bad so I don’t remember a definite point in time when I discovered it, but I know it was some time in early high school. I lurked for a few years until creating this blog in 2019 but I didn’t start actively using it until January 2021. Trying to think...I remember that in eighth grade I saw the episode of OUAT where Hook got hit by a car and I just loved that scene so much (and the one in the previous episode where he got beaten up by Rumpelstiltskin) that I made so many edits of it and wrote several really bad fanfictions...not sure how that translated to finding the whump community but I’m pretty sure I discovered it through looking at fanfictions tags and seeing people tag their hurt / comfort as whump

We in the community know how important it is to tag our whump correctly for trigger and content warnings, but tags are also how you can discover new fics, gif sets, prompts and other material.

@whumpmasinjuly Day 8: How did you find the whump community?

I was active in writeblr, but sometimes drawn to explore some darker topics that didn’t feel like they had a place there. 

Then I stumbled across whumpy writing, and was like.... oh? You can do that?? There’s a community for that? An audience even? I lurked for a short while, but quickly decided to set up a sideblog to be able to engage with the community, and I did make some amazing friends along the way.

(Tbh I realized that even in this community ‘you can do that ?’ is actually answered with “no” in some cases. But the niche group I had the luck to find myself in was super nice and supportive, and honestly, the niche has grown so much and I could be a part of it, and that was a good feeling)

Whumpmas in July, day 8

For me, whump's anything that gives me whumperflys. Anything that is hurting real people or using their pain for entertainment isn't whump anymore to me, but fictionalized hurt can be a powerful way to explore these themes.

Beyond that, just about anything goes. I love finding whump in unexpected places. Lately it's been Yakuza 0, the first game I've played in the series. Tall, handsome whumpee turned caretaker, turned whumpee again. Wistful sigh

What makes something “whump” to you?

“Whump” is the hurt part of the hurt/comfort equation. It feels mildly clinical to describe it like that, but I can’t think of a... more economical way to describe it. It’s hurting your character and, for me, that hurt has to mean something. It has to have a result, there has to be some kind of character change or growth, it has to further the plot. Like I really love whumpers who don’t start out that way, people who step into and discover they enjoy causing hurt and violence and chaos. 

Blind, just for shits, “I’m gonna whale on this character for a minute” can be really really fun, and there are tons of writers who are really really good at it. I’m not one of them -- I need the pain and suffering my characters go through to add up to something, a result, the “comfort” half of hurt/comfort. That pain can tell you so much about the core of a character, what they are at their most fundamental, and I really like peeling that all back and poking around.

WIJ Day 8: Tags

#whump community is one of my favorite ways to find new things! Whether that’s memes, or a new person who would really like some notes, I just think its a great way to keep up with what’s going on in our little corner of this hellsite while discovering new stuff. ( @whumpmasinjuly )
