Just a couple of weeks ago…
Passchendaele. Fifteen days, three thousand guns, four and a half million shells .
I left out the photos of dead, dismembered, burnt and maimed men and horses: the before & after says it all. North is to the right. Through October 1917 the front, and the fighting (and so the soldiers), moved through the village from top left to bottom right. Each of the speckles in the after photo is a shell hole. Not somewhere you’d want to find yourself.
