Rewilding Britain: 12 projects giving nature a boost

For what will perhaps be his last on-location documentary series, veteran broadcaster Sir David Attenborough has turned his attention to the wildlife found on home turf, the British Isles. 

As television goes, Wild Isles is a triumph, presenting viewers with an intimate portrait of iconic species and glorious panoramas of cherished landscapes. But behind the cinematic scenes is a story of decline. “Though rich in places,” warns Attenborough, “Britain as a whole is one of the most nature-depleted places in the world.”

From habitat loss to sewage discharge, pesticide use to poor land management, the reasons for the decline are many and varied. But across the country, grassroots groups are rallying to turn the tide. Here are some of the projects looking to make Britain a wild isle again.

Tonight's was the first part of Wild Isles, exploring the natural world here in the UK. Its so easy to think of our home shots as boring, but as David Attenborough's team is showing we live in a lush mandatory that teems with exciting and extraordinary life.

That life is in danger though, and just as important as other habitats around the world. TIL that 85% of the worlds chalk streams are in Southern England - we need to take care of them!

That only 5 parts of this 6 part series are being shown on scheduled TV (part 6 will only be available on iPlayer) because of fears of a backlash from those who deny environmental change is horrific. Hard truths need to be faced to save the unique and beautiful world we are privileged to inhabit.
